DEFORMED CROW BEAKS??

Hello Boys,

I was reading a waterfowl magazine recently and they were doing a study on "DEFORMED" beaks, not only was it cocerning duks but they commented on a study in progress in Alaska on ducks and "CROWS"! Have any of you "GUYS" "BOB" "SHANE" come across this phenomena? I haven't only that some beaks seem bigger than others! They have pointed their finger at "ecological, hereditary aspects and anoter thing called "KETATIN"= A BONE ISSUE!

                                                    ANY COMMENTS??confuse

Hello Hizz,

I never have shot any that I'm aware of. There is a good photo in the "Oddities" section from a fella from Connecticut who shot one similar to what you are talking about. I'm pretty sure you have seen this photo, but, just incase, I thought I'd mention it to you.

The crows in the Alaska study are double leg banded.  I have photos of ones I have seen up there.  Pellet gun was stong on my mind!

I posted this one before,  but it's the only strang looking beak I've seen.. The top of the beak has some type of "calcium" build up on it alothough it looks like cow manure.. Shot in upstate SC..

He was strange one alright...When I picked him up I kinda felt sorry for him having to source food with that beak..I wish now, I had him on a wall somewhere...Not sure what happened to him..Previously shot, preditor (hawk),  birth defect or what you guys were talking about... I used to just toss the birds in a bag with out looking at them but now I like to look for abnormalities...

you must be joking right? Crows are smart and can adapt to most anything..I've seen people eat a whole bowl of rice with two sticks about that size..: )

I wonder what part of Alaska, I spent a couple weeks in Alaska and all I saw was ravens. Except in the small fishing town of Whitier that you had to drive through a mountain/tunnel to get to, thats the only place I saw crows.

Dano,

I was in Whitier in 1970 and the only way to get there then through that tunnel was putting the car on a train!! SMALL WORLD!!

Wow that must've been a trick to do. The train goes through once an hour I believe so we had to wait a while to get our turn to go through the tunnel (one way traffic shared with a train makes it interesting). Was a strange little town, going through the underground tunnels to get to different area's, was beautiful though. Just got back from doing "The grand circle" out west, doing all the national parks around CO/UTAH/AZ and NM. What a big country we live in, and what a lot of open wasted space we have.
