Crow Behavior

Learned a lot on here and internet this first season, and saw some interesting typical crow behavior (e.g., sentries, scouts, etc.).  But, does anyone know about their flyway and roosting patterns -- do these persist year to year, or do they create all new every year?  In other words, can I count on crows being in the same places next year?

My experience is limited, but they go back to the general area year to year unless the roost takes a hit or two. (Either trees get cut down or they get shot up). The roost in my local town is around the cemetery and has been there for years. They start to gather there every fall.

I agree 100% with Pat roook. You are starting out the right way studying the behavior. My first year I spent hours just watching how the birds acted in the field. I would watch them stage and feed. I watched how some birds dominated other birds.  Acrow is about the rudest bird on the planet. I don't think I've ever seen one eat the morsel of food that it found. Somebody always steals it. If you ever find a nest (which is hard) watch those birds work together. it's amazing how loyal they can be that time of year. Then after the hatch its on again back to hating and stealing from each other. Bout like your average marriage after 20 years or sohmm I got to close to a roost my first year and burned em and they have never been back. I found where they went tho about 25 miles north west it cost em dearlybiggrin

The local crows  have been stealing the babies of the song birds around my house lately.. They are very crafty and very good hunter and thieves..

I videoed a crow eating a robin a few years ago..The robin was an adult and dead in my yard. ( I think a cat killed the robin) Anyone that thinks crows are smart and bla bla bla.. watch the video..they are omnivores and nasty.. The youtube video is "Crow on the court."

Your right Mark!! The crow is the the worst predator, for farmers, song birds and and game birds. Someone disagreed with me on this score,he said the coyote was the worst,I said when was the last time you saw 300 coyotes tearing up a farmers crops?no

Along the same lines. My son shot a squirrel (nothing but bushy tailed rats, when they get in your attic/garage) with a in our yard. Within a half hour it was carried off by crows.  Either that or completely devoured as not a hair was left behind. It was laying on top of snow.

They say for every crow you kill you save 12 duck eggs! A D.U. study I believe!
