The Crow season for Indiana came in on July 1st, and I thought I would go out and try to bust some crows. No such luck. I set up a motion decoy on a clear spot on the ground, laid down a decoy rabbit next to the crow, and fired up the electronic caller. I started at around 5:30 of the afternoon. Tried again at 7:30, and one more time at 8:15. Didn't get so much as a fly-by. I have had bad luck before, but THIS! Is there a better time of day to be setting up for a crow hunt? Something I'm missing here?
This is the breeding season and crows are still locked in small family units. No large concentrations gathering as of yet. Breeding family units are comprised of the breeding pair, their young of the year and possibly a few offspring from the past season.
Run and gun hunting is the most productive at this time. Find a suitable location in crow country and call from there. You will get one good crack at them and possibly another fly by should you not be spotted. Then move on to another location and do the same
Setting up fancy decoy spreads and sitting at one location at this time of the season will be fruitless IMO. Also stop, listen and look. Hunt where the crows are and don't try and drag them to where they don't want to be. Good luck!

Hey Tom,,,,,,,, This may be the wrong time of year for you. If you are anywhere close to the southern Illinois line near the Wabash river, just wait til the leaves start to turn. You wont be able to keep your gun loaded Thats one of the biggest roost in the midwest. My mouth waters so bad I have to wear a bib everytime I go over there!!!!
