Reloading Question for the Old Gunners.

I have been looking at Alliant's 20/28 powder. Do any of you that shoot the old guns use this powder because of it's low pressure? and if so do you have a 1 3/8 ounce load for it. It is similar to IMR's 7625 in pressure but has a sightly lower charge weight and is about 25% cheaper.  Looking at all the info I can find, it should work, but I haven't been able to locate a load. I have a call into Alliant and will hopefully hear from them soon.

Ah, the book.

I was in a shoot off at a recent trap calcutta.  We were back quite a ways, way past the cement.  Probably about 37 yards back.  My dad walks over and hands me some shells and says "these arent in the book" and walks away.

I wasnt sure I wanted to shoot them!  biggrin

I did shoot them and my partner and I actually won the shoot off.  biggrin  I think they were some kind of hopped up 1 1/4 #6's.

I use 20/28 for the 20 gauge but I've never noticed any loads for 12 gauge using it. Not that they don't exist. It may be close to 7625 which is one of my all time favorites for 1 1/8 oz and even 1 1/4 oz but I'd consider ita damn poor choice for 1 3/8oz. There are so many good powder choices for 1 3/8oz I wouldnt waste time trying to figure out something with 20/28

I really like the 7625 in a 1 3/8 load. Just trying to cut down on the number of powders I keep around especially if I will only load a few to hunt something specific with it. I recently posted some pics of a 1 3/8 oz load of 5's that were incredible. Most 1 3/8 loads that I have seen are heavy powder charges trying to max out fps. I don't want that, just a 1200 fps load that puts a lot of holes in a squirrel.

I too am a fan of the 7625 in an 1 1/8 oz load. There are a number of loads for 12 ga using 20/28. I like the fact that the charge is lighter by several grains. It is cheaper than 7625, $110 per 8 lbs verses $151 per 8 lbs for 7625. It has similar pressures which gives the feeling of a push instead of a snap.

Alliant says it is very clean burning. In your experience is it as clean as Int Clays?

If I could find a 1 3/8 oz load for it to replace the 7625 load I am planning to use it will serve all my reloading needs in 12 and 20. Can't beat that.

Yea, the cost of 7625 has started to become an issue for me too. I actually picked up some Herco instead of 7625 last time I needed some powder. Seems like it was around $115 for 8#. It tends to push 1 1/8oz a little faster than I need but seems to work plenty good for 1 1/4oz. And I'm starting to get out of reloading 1 1/8oz shells as they are easier to purchase than reload so Herco may become a go to powder in the future due to its cost.

I tend to run around the 1250 fps range and I haven't come across a 1 3/8oz 7625 load that hits that fps with lower pressure and using Fed209 primers which is my preference with a hunting load. The load probably exists I just haven't looked hard for it as I don't really use many 1 3/8oz shells over the course of a year.

For 1 3/8oz I tend to favor 4756. It isn't quite as pricey as 7625 but still more expensive than most Alliant powders that I've seen; I think you can probably find 8# for something like $130. You should be able to run around 1200fps at 11000 psi in a tapered hull and faster in a straight walled. The upside is it also does nice double duty for 20 gauge---it would be cheaper than 7625 but still more expensive than 20/28.

I haven't used much Int Clays and I typically shoot over/unders so I pay little attention to cleanliness.
