Son Daniel built himself a new Drum Set

It's a pretty involved process - but he's been painting and staining with me for many years, so the sanding and staining and varnishing he's got down.

It was a little scary for him when he started drilling holes in the shells to receive the hardware - after spending all his savings on them (over $1000) - but they turned out perfect!

He's so stoked, and enjoyed building them so much, he says he might start building them for other drummers!

yes I am.

Thus the name, jon the pain. When email first came out, hotmail was the first free email service. So I signed up and typed in my handle, jon the painter. That's what everybody's called me for the last 35 years. Offline, anywho.

Well, microsoft in their infinite wisdom at that time only allowed 10 characters for email addresses. So the "ter" got chopped off. Thus 'jonthepainter' became 'jonthepain.'

Which many considered strangely appropriate. So it stuck.

Been 'jon the pain' ever since.

Did he build the shells?  If so WOW!  Tell him to keep practicing with his left hand on the hi hats, not alot of people can play with there left hand on the hats and he does it well.  Also tell him to get his foot into some of his fills and he will be a monster!   Also practice rudiments everyday.  He's got the skills,  if he masters the rudiments and breaks up his fills with some kick he will be unstopable.

Very impressive!!!  I've never seen much evidence of that American tradition of, "I'll just figure out how to do it and build my own!" in today's generation.  Kudos to your son; you should be very proud!.

Jon,

We have something in common. My son will be 18 next month, plays the drums and Jazz is what he likes best too.

Your son did a great job building those.

What are the odds? But this is my middle (22) yr old son. My youngest son (18) plays guitar and bass.

But they both love jazz. :D

me too.

I have to admit, I am not a fan of Jazz, but my son and I listen to music together a ;ot. I am a school teacher so he rides to work with me everyday. It's a half hour drive, one way. We listen to maily 60's and 70's rock.
