Hey I have a story for you guys, see the fella raking up the empty hulls in the orchard. Well in past years I've had crows fall inside the blind. On one hunt he was sitting on a bucket next to me in my two man blind when here come three crows (all together) straight at us. I raise up and pop the first two and just as I touch off the shot on the third bird Eric falls off his bucket out the back side of my blind.
I ask him "what happened" as he raised up the front of his face had blood all over it; he said "your second crow hit me in the face" I did not know if it was crow blood or his blood? I aksed "are you ok" he said "I think your crow got me" I carry toilet paper in my 7 gallon bucket that I use for a seat so I used some of it to clean up his face to see where the bleeding was coming from. The crows beak went right through his left ear! The bill mandibles only went through approx 1/4 of an inch, had it gone through all the way he would have looked like a Ubangie from Africa! Anyway we used direct pressure to stop the bleeding. He said "man, I'm really mad at those crows now!"

I have had to fall back to keep from being hit myself as well. The bird hit my bucket after I feel off. My buddy was about to wet himself from laughing. I have been trying to time one just right to return the favor, but just can't seem to get one perfect yet. Been close several times! LOL

Yes the temps were very nice, actually a little warm for my liking, high 60's to low 70's. It's nice getting out and being able to do what you love. I made the Federal Cartridge Coorporation very happy on this trip!

Before the pecan harvest I have to pick up all the downed crows that fall inside the orchard. That is how I noticed the piebald fish crow. Thats why I carry a rake with me, on flat ground as in an orchard with little ground cover it's much easier on the back to just rake the emptys into piles. Then I just tip my trash bucket sideways and just shove em all in!

Bob,,,,, glad you are back for a minute...... On this hunt did you feel like the numbers were ok and did you have a good ratio of young birds to shoot???
There are always plenty of young ones that pay dearly at this time of year. In answer to your question, yes, the ratio was about 3 to 1 with the young birds out numbering the more mature birds. The numbers were good for one guy not two.
I just shipped off a very large box of crow wings to Ken Weidner who makes up indian war bonnetts & headdresses out of crow feathers. I even traded an indian 12 good crow wings for a walking stick that he was selling for $ 12.00 each. We were both happy over that little trade. Crow feathers are big in with the indians.
I mentioned to Ken that the next movie (silver screen) I would like to see a foot note with my name in regard to the feathers.
Thats about it Chip, well it won't be long now for you Chip. Oct. 28th it starts for you.

Did not know you ventured that far south. I hope our southern folks treated you well while you were here. We haven't been seeing the migratory birds yet. How were the numbers in AR? Any birds there that you believe were migratory?

These were all local birds the migrants will not arrive for another 3 to 4 weeks.
Like I mentioned it was fine for one shooter but not enough for two shooters. On average I was getting anywhere from 102 to 135 each day. I have nothing else going on (waiting for the migrants to arrive) at this time so this is how I fill the void. I got rained out two days so I found a pool hall (40 miles from the motel) and had a ball banging some balls with some pretty good shooters. I love high runs wheather it's billiard balls or live birds! Most pool players are not hunters, but a lot of them play golf.
