Retrievers for crows?

Just started crow hunting. I freaking love it! Finally got into a good shoot, i am addicted. I noticed a couple pics with dogs. I use my lab for waterfowl but never tried him on crows. I am a little concerned with cripples and sharp beaks. Any advice? I see myself doing a LOT of crow shooting and feel a little naked without a dog.

Lyduckhunter:

I would never describe my dogs as "hunting dogs" as they are ill-mannered and fire off like rockets whenever I shoulder a long gun.  I've taken them on a few TCP sorties testing the loose theory that crows will be enraged by seeing their shot wingmen being mauled by wild dogs.

Didn't work at all like that.  Survivors clawed for altitude.

But the terible twosome did make short work of any crow, alive or dead, that got anywhere near the earth and the collisions were nothing short of a canine locomotive hitting a sack of protoplasm.  No injuries were sustained by the dogs in two hunts featuring a couple dozen crows.

There is a company that makes "Doggles" which are googles for dogs.  I've got a pair and my calmest dog wore them for two to three nanoseconds, so I let them operate naked.  That's too bad, because those Doggles are pretty cool, with a skull and crossbones on either side of the frame.

My old boy has been  on a few missions, and he loves it, and does great but I have found leaving the downed crows laying in the decoys helps alot.

So usually leave him home to save his energy for chasing roosters and swimming for ducks.

If you could train them to only retrieve the cripples, they would be priceless. But you dang sure need to leave the dead ones as decoys.

Mine used to go with.

Too old now. Can't hardly walk. Hasn't lost the desire, though!

Jon:

Those are priceless images of your Friend with you.  Both of mine have white patches on their chests.  And white muzzles, too.

Thank you for sharing.

Lyduck:

The comments I made earlier are not indicative of what your animal may encounter nor how it will behave, so be careful and remember, think of dogs as little people in dog suits.  They will behave differently when crows are thudding in.

A crow has a needle sharp beak, and can turn his head like an owl. One light peck and you have a one eyed dog. It ain't worth the risk fella's. All of us have felt the rath of a cripples beak. I think ones claw would be just as bad. I wouldn't do it.disbelief Jon isn't it amazing how strong your love can be for a dog??? Mine is just like one of my boys. If a guy knew just how bad you were gonna miss them when they are gone you would have never had them in the first placeno

it's hard to say it, but better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

i've had a few dogs in my 54 years, and it was always heartbreaking when they left, but i feel richer for having them share my life for a while.

We use to take my yellow lab all the time for about 3-4 years, she was a duck dog turned crow dog, she freaking loved it! Crows were never to rough on her either, she put the hammer on them.  We had great luck with crows going nuts seeing her go out and pick up one of their downed friends!  She is much to old to hunt now but I have great memories hunting crows with her!

I have a Jack Russel Terrier that retrieves crows and ducks for me. Even if they fall in water. If crows are still living when she gets to them, they don't last long. Actually very entertaining to watch her finish one off. Her name is Weasel. She only weighs  11 pounds and has never had a crow get the best of her.

Here is a pick from a couple months ago. She wants to hang onto the crow even after it's dead. :)  If I tell her to "leave it," she will let it go and walk away. (like on ducks where I don't want the meat ruined.)

Needed the hounds last year to tidy up an urban whack!  The performed admirably.
