How many decoys do you use?

Just wondering on average how many decoys everyone uses on a hunt.  We typically hunt over 3-5 dozen decoys.  At times I wonder if we have to many decoys and not enough realistic motion in the spread.  Thinking about dropping down to 1-2 dozen decoys and a few flappers.  What are yall's opinions?

I routinely take 8 with me and flapper. My hunting partner takes 5 and two wind activated flyers. Seems to be all that is needed. The older I get the lighter and less bulk I care to carry.

Hi Pete,

We agree...  We typically use 4 to 6 on the ground, 2 in a tree and an additional flapper for some motion the first thing in the morning.

Later in the day on other sets we reduce the total, sometimes deploying none.

Regards,

"We agree", careful there GB, next thing you know you'll be trading those metro barrels for classic double, maybe even a 10 bore and...............maybe even shooting 6's biggrin

Typically 2 or 3. A few well placed deeks work miles better than a dozen poorly placed. IMO dead crows still make the best crow decoys in many applications.

I use about 8 in the trees. The ground ones will be taken care of soon enough.

I have realized this year and toward the end of season last year that less is best. These birds are greedy fighters and if they see a small amount of deeks the birds comming in are braver and believe they can take advantage of the the ones that are already there. Steal what they are eating or whip some butt. Remember crows are gang bangers, They are like street gangs!!

 Hi Pete,

A buddy and I went with the 10 bore years ago and learned we could not carry enough ammo, on our person or little ATV's, for heavy crow days.  It was really a long range thumper, no doubt about 2 and 1/4 ounces of hard fours backed by 41 grains of Blue Dot!

Regards,

Yes Sir! I am a big believer in being light and mobile. Sitting on one location all morning and waiting for the crows to come to you is not always the best plan.

Purchased a half dozen of the Boondocker shells. They are light and very compact. Easy to stick up on a branch and your in business. So simple it's almost silly!
