I apologize in advance as I cannot help myself... I gotta post the events of last Friday...that started a week ago today when I was giving out Christmas presents to the dairy farmers who are kind allow me to shoot their crows and pigeons.
Last Wed. I arrived at the 4th farm of the day around 1 pm...it was raining slightly but I had brought my "crow stuff" just in case. After giving Mr. Kirk his gift he then made my Christmas by saying..."about 50-100 crows moved in here in the past week AND one of them is chocolate brown... and another is solid white with a black head." Quickly light headed, I had to grab a fence post to keep my balance! He then pointed to a dead tree about 200 yards away and said the white one sat there yesterday for about 10 minutes and that he had started to get his .204, etc. I told him quickly that even though it was his farm... all the crows belonged to me...and to lay off the non-black crows!! We both laughed.
The best place to ambush his crows was in a hardwood forest 400 yards from his silos...but NO cover for a run & gunner. I drove to the edge of those trees, hopped out and built a make-shift blind from Cedar saplings that were all over. I told Mr. Kirk I would return Friday ( we cannot hunt crows in NC on Thursdays )... early Friday.
At 0715 Friday, after setting up two Assault Crows in an open spot amongst the hardwoods...with crows hollering in the not so distance, I cranked several low "tweets" from my Gibson... and braced myself. All that was on my mind was FIND the White Whale....er...crow...let the black ones circle, fly off, do whatever they do...but wait for snowwhite to arrive..
Well, after about2 minutes of having 10-20 birds overhead, I could not stand it anymore and put the Maxus into its de-crowing mode. I killed 32 birds without moving but NO brown or white target showed.. After 90 minutes, I packed up, stopped by the farm and reported my TBC to Kirk. He has another smaller farm about 3/4 miles down the road near a Baptist Church.. and I headed that way thinking some of the stragglers (think brown and/or white) I might have missed might be there. Many were.
I set up only one decoy ( a feathered crow... wired to a low limb ), hide in a bamboo outcropping (never did that before) and called. One hour later 40 were dead. Amazingly, close in shots were plentiful and none of them remotely acted "educated"...a fresh bunch no doubt..but still NO non-black crow. Total by 10:30 = 72 KIA.
Policed up the dead, grabbed my decoy and headed to a gas station for a drink and cracker... with one more farm to hit...about 10 miles away that had one of favorite crow producing spot from past years known as "the garbage dump". Well, just because it produced in past years, does not mean it will this year plus some of the deer hunters who work that farm occasionaly try and call a crow- not good. I got in place, both decoys deployed, by 1:30... shot singles, doubles, etc..just perfect crow presentations.... till 4 pm...killed another 36 birds totaling me out at a nifty 108 for the day that might be a record for this run and gunner: fewest stands (3) to produce 108 birds! In other words, a great crow day despite NO brown or white ones to bring home!
As an old timer crow hunter, I can tell you fooling crows never gets old..

That is a great day Skip! Congrats or the 3 digit shoot. It sure is nice to break a hundred. Good luck with the brown and white ones. Would love to see pics of them laying across the Maxus.

Have you noticed new birds migrating into your area? My sweet spot area is still slim; last year loaded with birds, but not many this season. Went Tuesday and killed 17 on a solo hunt, best for that area this year. Hopefully we will get more birds into the area as the weather cools.
Bravo Skip! 108 KIA's with only 3 stops hardly qualifies as a run & gun technique. Just think of the fuel savings if R&G was always so productive. Best of luck finding those "odd ball" crows

Way to go Skip, sounds like a great day and shooting! Too bad ya didn't get a shot at the white bird with the black top knot. I heard of someone else sighting that same crow and it was sporting bling on both legs!
Darn fine day you had Skip!! Congratulations on a f couple fine shoots!! Too bad those oddballs didn't show up tho!! I've sen 1 white crow here. It was in the summer when they are out of season & I was groundhog hunting. Sure wanted to take it out but from past experiences with the 204 on crows it woulda been a total disaster!! LOL
great days crow busting lust back in from zeroing in my new 22 250 browning ss rifle good fun getting back to crow busting on wednesday back here in a cold and snow covered northern ireland
Doug: It is a departure from norm for me to use a decoy or decoys... but I have started using two...if the terrain allows. One is the Assault crow..and the other a feathered decoy crow... very realistic and fools live crows! Since most of my run and gun stands are IN woods, there is usually scant space to set up any decoy, but when there is... I use these two. I can carry both with gun/ammo in one trip from the vehicle.
Chip: I am headed back out for round 2.... in my attempt to nail the non-black crows. I wanted to give the bunch some time to regroup but like you, this has been on my mind daily!
Glen: I could not have brought myself to shoot either crow in question here, with a rifle..must less a .22/250 or .204. It would have ruined a fine trophy as you well know. As the expression goes..."all the King's men could not have put this crow back together". I'll ether get them with small shot...or they survive.
M12: You are quite right...3 stands in one day does not a run and gunner make!! BUT.. whatever it was, I would like a few 100 more such days!!
Elkhunter, I sure plan on hitting that place again, the haunt of the white crow.. this Friday. Rest assured 8fisherman, should I luck up and drop one of the sought after targets, pictures of the bird and Max...will be posted along with my smile ...that might stretch the bulletin board screen..
And thanks to the rest of you guys and your kind remarks... 5 more days to go before re-engagement.

LOL There is always the possibilty one of those rifles would NOT ruin a prize crow. But I agree the chances are waaaaaaay too slim to try & find out!! I have no doubt there will be bragging,, & rightfully so of course,, should one or both of those crows have a "bad" day. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!
Two weeks ago today, I put the undertaker on 108 all black crows while hoping to see the "great white whale...er crow"... but failed. He did not show. I returned this morning, high hopes in place, Maxus at-the-ready.. for my return sortie.
Basic Crow 101 instructs one does not return to the exact same place with hopes all the birds have forgotten the a-- whipping put on them a mere 14 days earlier. They remember well..too well. I know that. BUT, the white crow is a resident of this 750 acre farm.. so I could not journey too far away. Rational thought does not always prevail and I did the dumb and set up in my footprints from 2 weeks ago and tweeted. I wanted the white crow!
Somehow...a couple of dozen birds responded immediately. I waited as long as I could to checkout their color... all the while my fire control system was yelling " shoot dummy" ( no bonafide crow hunter can stand birds overhead and in range for very long..think seconds ) so I caved (what relief)...and birds started falling. By the way, aren't falling crows are one of the great sights in nature!! Birds continued for about an hour...TBC was 22. No white or brown bird down. I left for same stand #2. So far, not so dumb!
Using only a very realistic "feathered" decoy ( perched on a low limb ) I blew my Gibson again. Response was same as above...birds rolled in ( I was amazed, I really was...given how many were killed just 2 weeks ago..they had to be virgin birds ) and I downed 18. I left for home. White and brown crows are still at large much to my great chagrin. I will try again..as Capt. Ahab did with with the white whale..
It is also amazing to us as we retrace our steps how many "Dumb" crows will come it after a short rest. We shot one place a few weeks back and killed 91. We waited 6 days to shoot the same fields and moved the blind 3/4 of a mile Northwest and killed another 131. We knew the first day the wind was bad and a lot of birds didn't hear us or more likely were not willing to buck the wind to get to the fight. The persistence to return paid off for us. I hope your persistence pays off also. One thing on your side is the Great White and the Great Brown are both still dumb. Lets hope their "education" leads them to a PhD in taxidermy.

8Fisherman: Uneducated = taxidermy! I like that thought!! I do not think the crows you and shot AT the same place were dumb... they just had not been around to get educated on the first visit.
Great game plan Skip!! Wipe out all the black crows 1st. Then the other 2 will have to stop by to see what the heck happened to them!! Then all you have to do is double up, pick, & head for the taxidermist!! What a masterful plan you have contrived for Brer white & Brer brown crow!!!!!!
Final "white crow" report... Hunted 'the' area again today with less than optimistic feelings about seeing the white crow. I made only one stand. Had a fine shoot (for me) downing 29 crows. There was, however, a few brief seconds I thought I was seeing "whitey".
Coming directly at me..full bore.. was a crow with an entirely white head. I mean nothing was white on the front end of that crow....and I thought my original information could have been wrong: black crow with white head vs. white crow with black head.
I shot the crow..in the face.. at 30 yards. It tumbled towards me...and then I saw what the white part was. The bird was carrying in his mouth....a huge piece of white bread in his beak. It completely blanked out his face. How he could see AND make caws...is beyond me.
Amazingly, he fell through and bounced off several branches before crashing.. but he never dropped the bread. Tough critter.
Take the bread from your crow, the chicken wing form Shaddart's crow, the scallop form Shane's and the ketchup from mine and we would have ourselves a pick-a-nic basket! LOL
