Hi Matt,

Maybe extinct was a harsh word. How about decimate. Just imagine if you could get $4.75 per bird. Since the 50's, the U.S. population (people) has doubled, how many more million registered hunters does that equate to in the woods today. Even non hunters would start to register. Some guys would do it for a part time job. No bird would be safe. Pellets out of windows, roosts would be destroyed every non crow hunter would become one and just save up the feet for the pay day. The sport as we no it would be over.

Mike

Some people would get rich for a little while.

Let's see........we collected 102 crows a week ago..........102 x $4.75 = $484.50

Not bad for a few hours "work."biggrin Of course we burned up $50 in cartridges, spent another $57 on the new decoy, $30 worth of gas in the truck, hunting license, camo, ATV registration.....etc......

Dust,

Can't help you on the contact.

I don't remember ever reading that article. If that bounty per bird was here, crows would be extinct.

I don't think so Mike, there used to be a bounty on them (I think in the 40's or 50's), and as you can see, they are still thriving!

Kev,

Imagine getting paid for something you enjoy and are going to lay out the money anyway.

In the 1930's during the "Great Depression" they paid a dime per crow! The fellas that hunted them back then made way more per week than the average guy making $ 20.00 a week! This was here in Kansas, the ammo box on the left (dark color) is Government Issue ammo given to the farmers out here to shoot the crows, thats right, free ammo, only trap loads in 12 gauge. This was in the 1930's.

Hi Jerry,

Very few of the old original wooden cases ever made it! They used to chop them up and throw them in the old pot bellied stoves for heat in those days.

I like old ammo boxes (25 cartridges per box) as well. Here is a photo taken inside my museum in Kansas.

Bob; all of mine are cardboard, most are empty or close to it. Don't have many, maybe 6 or 8, but they're old. I'll take a look at them & let you know what they are. Jerry
