Side by side for a novel.

For a murder weapon in a novel I need an old side by side double in 12 gauge.  It is necessary to be very specific in describing the gun and shell and I don't want to get shredded by guys that know much more about the subject than I do, my knowledge being limited to handguns.  Here are the requirements:

1.  It must be old and of good quality, say a Parker or Lefever, but not so old that there is no commercial ammunition for it.

2.  It is necessary to accurately describe the  shotshell, including shell size, markings, primer size, etc.  There are many descriptions of guns on the web: the main problem is tying a particular shell to a particular gun.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cal.

ELEY Impax, been around for years, light 2 inch 12 guage load, and would be suitable for an old English boxlock or side lock, by say Purdey, or Holland and Holland, with nice Damascus barrels

Why not go over to the Doublegun BBS and ask those questions.  Everyone over there is pretty much familiar with shotguns and ammo for the time period you want to recreate.  I do not believe Ely ammunition was in or popular in the US in the hayday of American classic doubles.

But first you must go here. www.drake.net/newshotguns  . This way you can understand what Redditch is talking about , Purdey, H&H, Boss, Woodward are all works of art. When talking about SxS shotguns you must talk about the best.

Always remember when talking about shotguns, speak of the best.

Well, is the story happening? The US? Who is the killer?
Some random lowlife killer in 1821 would not have used a Purdey or H&h etc.... So tell us about the killer and we'll sugest a gun + cartridge ;)
