The board seemed a little slow so I thought I'd throw out a pic to my most recent hunt. IMO it was a pretty good one as far as hunting in August goes. I managed 53 (shot one more after pic was taken) by 10:30am when the temps started to rise. I also shot 6 pigeons...Chip would have been proud. The wind was calm and the birds worked the setup from every direction with no discretion. That is not the nicest but I made it work. I shot my 870 with my special 1 oz crow-loads. I used both #7 and #6 shot. I shot well with several doubles and two triples. I used 18 decoys.....17 flambeaus and 1 carrylite.
Great August hunt results and photo's... 59 crows and pigeons is a fantastic solo effort, even more so for a summer shoot. Very motivational for the TCP! We are chomping at the bit to get going, too.
8fishermen: No official name yet but the stake cracked even more when I put it out...not sure how many more hunts the 'ole girl has in her.
chip: Not many big bunches of crows. I only had one group of 10 or more that came for a look...and that is fine as I'd rather have smaller groups anyway.
Virginian2: Share my load info? Sure. Its nothing too special but its economical and works great for me. I use the same shells all year 'round. 12 gauge load. 1oz of shot. I have loaded 5s, 6s, and7s with 6's and 7's most commonly used. I use STS or AA hulls. Federal primers. Mec progressive reloader with a #32 bushing of Promo powder. Usually claybuster wads. Not 100% sure but I think these are rated right around 1300fps. I have found these to be quite effective at the crow killing and I can load them for more than $1 cheaper per box than the Walmart cheapies but have a far better shell. Just my .02.
Nice work BH, that's a great shoot in my parts any time of year! Reloading is the way to go, better shells and less money, plus you can load the magnum #6 and 7's which work much better than the smaller target size shot. I use Fiocchi primer and Green Dot powder along with the Claybuster wads. 1 ounce 12ga loads cost me about $4.57 a box per the reloading cost calculator.
Honkers how dare you set the bar that high here in the Great Lake State. I don't even see 53 birds in a set till Feb. Real nice shoot though, you inspire me. Good luck with the Honkers this year.
