I was all fired up from joining the Forum yesterday and receiving all the good advice, that I had to go out early this a.m. Went out to listen for turkey and watch for deer at a friend’s farm. As I heard/saw neither, it soon became time to get out the crow gear.
This was a tight setup between an overhanging tree line and the cornfield. This posed a sighting problem as the large trees’ branches overhung quite a bit, restricting me to small openings. After I moved a bit to a better opening, I got a couple; one landed right in front and other out in the corn. These were “country crows” but they seemed very interested in the garbage bag, or the two decoys posted high--one on a couple of corn stalks, the other on a branch stuck in the ground. I think it was the latter. I varied my mix of Bob’s 10-call package and other FoxPro calls. Recognition, Please Come Here, and Young Crow seemed to work quite well. Lasted from about 0730-0830.
What surprised me was the steady action for about an hour. I would get two-three to come in, miss a couple, then not too long thereafter another two-three would come in. i.e., they did not stay away, even in the presence of 12 ga. ka-booms. I think it was the time of day. Sometimes they came in from the rear, perched directly above me, made a bunch of racket, then would fly away forward of me allowing me to take shots.
At another setup on the way home, placed one decoy in the small tree to the left across the road, along with the caller. I hid in a small grove of 20’ pines. Got one to land with a good thump in the road, right in front of me.
Already a good, upbeat day!

"Before you turn on your e-caller" really scope the place out so you can shoot with out having over hanging branches handicap you! If the crows have not had any grim experience "before" you had a go at them then the report from your shotgun will not bother them. Educated crows act far differen't.
