Went out this morning! My partner have to work, so it is a solo hunt

I found a field with crows and pigeons, so I set-up my crow and pigeon decoys

The crows loved the set-up, but the pigeons didn't give a ****** lol!

This is my set-up

30 crows, only 1 pigeon but a lot of fun!

Target: BEAUTIFUL set up...  and looks like you had perfect weather. Fine "pile" to show for your efforts. What was your body count..and that looks like a fairly long barrel on your shotgun. What ammo were you using?

Target,

As always, great pictures and thanks for sharing.

I do not mind hunting by myself for crows, you get all the shooting!

I really like your blind/setup. I've been having them hide up and behind of me (my decoys) in the tops of the trees which is a problem for me as long as they have leaves--they won't get away with this during winter season! I set up in a treeline and only have 180 degrees or less. You have 360 and can catch them coming and going. Gotta try this!

Nothing wrong with the federal Top Guns in 7 1/2 and 8 shot IMO. These days I use them all the time when shooting my 12 gauges on crows. Pattern well in my shotguns and are priced right as well. Just be sure to pick up the 3 dram equiv. loads though.

Good advise not only on shot size but especially using 3 drams and not 2 3/4 drams.

The Top Guns are a good load, Ted, I picked up a bunch of Remington Gun Club Loads two weeks ago on sale.

The crows ought to be pulling out of Canada within the next couple of weeks.

Question for Target:

Are you in a flyway, or do you simply have large murders  in abundance? I'm also wondering if they kept coming back (immediately or fairly quickly) to your setup following your knocking one or two down and if so, why do you think they did so?

Thanks.

I try to always hunt on the "X" (feeding field)

I do a lot of road to find a field where the crows are feeding, and then, I find the best place to hide in that field (depend of cover, direction of the wind, roost....)

When you hunt in a feeding field, the crows come by themself to that field. You dont have to force them to come

So they are sure that the decoys are "real" crows feeding, they come to land in the set-up and feed with others crows

When I shot one, if there is crows to close, they are effraid and leave, but if they are more than 300 ft away, they dont seems to be affraid.
They dont mind of a "falling" crow (when you shot it) but dont like when there is a crow going away from the set-up, they understand there is something wrong!

I always pick-up dead crows and hide them, because they have a really good eyesight and dont like dead bodies!

(sorry for my mistakes, I speak french so it is hard to have a good grammar in english)

Thanks for the tips. I am a new crow hunter, so others' suggestions are quite helpful.

Bonjor target,  I have some questions for you.. The set up looks great! Do you use a call or just let the crows come in? If yes, electronic or mouth? I would assume a feeding call? I traveled in Cananda  last November and saw huge numbers... Good luck to you..

I have an electronic call and I use the feeding sound from "Johnny Stewart" cd

But I use it only when the crows seems to be shy to come. 90% of the time I dont use call because crows come by themself

I find leaving the dead ones on the ground adds to the hunt, brings in the crows screaming mad, just make sure they are all laying within shooting range, try it once, let us know what you think

I typically leave shot crows where they fall as well. Never found this to "spook" incomers at all. Incomers do many times fly in with a rather "bamboozled" pace as though they are looking down in confusion. Distracts from the guy in cover nearby with the shotgun barrel pointing upwardsbiggrin

Ted

I typically leave
