Out solo at first light this morning to an old yard surrounded by hundreds of acres of sunflower... crow candy up here. Several thousand crows were feeding on this field last week and I didn't have to wait long to warm my gun barrel as first light brought a few bandits which were dealt with in the usual manner.
Shorthy thereafter crows began to arrive but unfortunately in large groups which is not condusive to heavy kills. Wind also picked up strong from the north and sadly the crows also decided to feed way to the north in the midle of the field. My calling into the stiff wind went for the most part without notice. Managed 26 crows, a magpie and few other assorted critters by coffee time.
Photos below represent a view from my blind at the edge of the sunflower, crow dropped stone dead on a nearby grain bin, and some of the kill.

The one that hit the sheet metal must have made a different "Thump." That's an experienced-looking ol' pump gun you have there. Nice photos. Our trees are just beginning to turn colors.

That is just one of the breaks when the wind picks up (or a wind shift) and you are down wind of them, how well I know. Did you have time to pick up and move up wind of them that day?

No time to move upwind Bob, had to work nights tonight so I wanted to be packed up and heading home by noon. Artilleryman, funny you should say. Smoked that crow and was trying for the double when it landed with a hollow "bong". Kind of "bamboozled" me for a second and I never did get that second shot off.
