If you could have only ONE shotgun to use for crow hunting, which gun would it be?

   Make or Brand:

   Model:

   Gauge:

   Barrel length:

Me?  I'd take a SKB model 1900, 12 ga. 26" barrel.

In more recent years it would be a Beretta model 391 semi auto in 12 gauge. Wood stock & 26 inch barrel with a vent rib & ivory bead.

I know I am crazy.

But, mine would be a Mossburg 500 with a 32 in steel shoot vented rib barrel. Nicknamed it AT&T years ago. It will reach out and touch one.

Elk,

No such thing as crazy. As long as the firearm is reliable and you shoot it well what more can a guy ask.

Hi guys,

  • Browning
  • Maxus MODB
  • 12 gauge  - 3 inch chamber
  • 26 inch barrel plus a 32 inch Metro barrel extension

I had been using a 3.5 inch chambered Maxus with a 28 inch barrel and the Metro extension, but this new one I bought a couple of weeks ago seems to function better with the excellent Federal "Metro Field" loads that Texas Matt discovered.

Regards,

Model 12 Winchester
12 or 16 gauge
28 or 30 inch barrels

*I own a locker full of M12's and also several more "modern" auto shotguns. Just enjoy shooting the vintage guns as I don't feel this to be much of a handicap when hunting crows. I'm somewhat of a "traditionalist", a blued steel and walnut type of guy. For me life's too short to hunt with ugly gunsbiggrin

Lately I`ve been using the Maxus with 30" bbl...at first I found it kind of long but getting more used to it...it`s the sporting clays 3" model...I wanted the 28" but wasn`t one in stock. I have several Ithaca 37 in 12ga and some old Browning Double autos also a couple of old sxs doubles...I like to switch around between them all...not sure which is my favorite at this point, but for fire power and light kick the maxus is looking pretty good. There`s something kinda cool about dropping birds with a 90yr old sxs too.BTW, I`m looking for a nice old Ithaca 37 in 16ga to add to the collection.

If only one it would be my synthetic M1 with a 26" barrel.  Right now it sports a 28" but if I where only allowed one I would want it with a 26" barrel and a trigger job and maybe even dipped in natgear.

Make or Brand: Remington

Model: 870 Supermag

Gauge: 12 ga

Barrel length: 26"

She is my do all end all shotgun, turkey, geese, ducks, crows, whatever. Grew up with 870s, my Dad always had them. I wanted one from the time I could shoot.

Favorite shotgun - Lefever HE, 12 g. sidelock SXS with ****ing indicators, 30 inch Krupp steel barrels, choked full and full, twin triggers, ejectors - deadly on crows and doves. Routinely drop birds at 50 - 55 yards with Nitro 27s, as long as there is no wind. A real meat gun, built around 1910 or so - was my dad's gun, fits me perfectly.

Favorite quail gun - Browning BSS, 20 g SXS, selectable trigger, ejectors, 28 inch barrel - choked improved and mod, generally shoot #9 shot at quail

Honorable mention - LC Smith SXS, 32 in barrels, choked full and extra full - "Long Range" is engraved on the gun, great on windy days or on extremely high birds.

Billboytx, you have excellent taste in your choice of scatterguns and you are fortunate man to have an American Classic doublegun as a legacy from your father, a true blessing.

Model 1897.  20 inch barrel with shroud because if its your favorite and targets aplenty, you don't want to suffer any burns!  Short, handy, stout, heavy, a product of the genius of John Moses with no disconnector and a noisy action but after the first hammer drop, the gigs up and you're on Main Street, Pump City, USA!

Lone Star Phil, is that an original M97 trench gun or a reproduction?

Ted:

I once owned a nice 30 inch Winchester that was pristine but it sat in my gun safe, so I sold it.  I don't deserve to be around museum quality pieces.

That one's a repro.  (The Kimber 1911 in the mesquite tree was there when I stopped to take a picture, so I took it!  Honest!)  The 97 is a Norinco, parked, BLO'ed stock, action job and choke tubes.  Inasmuch as the TCP regulation is to accommodate suppressed tubes, I have a metro barrel extension for it as well.

My favorite is my Lefever NITRO SPECIAL side by side 12 gauge made in 1927.
Duel triggers.
No ejectors but wish I had them.
30" barrels, but overall it's shorter than my pump with 28" barrel.
Chokes are FULL and MOD which is awesome to have instant choke selection depending on distance of crow.

I now have a second one of these Lefevers that is the same except it has 28" barrels and both are I/C chokes.

I amost bought a Versa Max, I heard a couple of negitive reviews on them and bought a Winchester SX3 instead. Haven't shot it yet, but I have used my sons Winchester SX2, and his Remington 1100. His 1100 has had a couple of issues over the past couple of years. I like shooting either of them, I gave him a Browning A5 that I picked up for #250 last fall, I haven't shot it yet. He has and he likes it. I'm going to buy a nice Double O/U with screw in chokes this spring or summer. Ruger Red Label maybe.

That's too bad. Every gun made you can find bad reviews. I can shoot any gun I want and any action. Own and shot many that I don't weekly at the gun club. I can tell you I have never come across an auto (3.5") that can cycle loads like the Versa Max. I can also tell you that it is hands down the softest shooting 12 gauge I have ever shot. They had a few bugs to workout when they first come out but I think the newer versions are a great gun. Highly adjustable in minutes height, cast, and LOP. Swings great and fits me perfect. When I read a bad review on something I know that there are thousands who like them. Many gun of the year awards from many sources so it can't be that bad.

My favorite Crow buster is my Mossberg 500 28". I use either #4 or #5 custom reloads of Copper plated lead shot. I also prefer using my Extra Full Turkey choke from H.S. Strutt. The combination is very effective as long as I'm in the groove and my shooting is up to par that morning. Here's a picture of my "Feather Duster 500".

I'm not a fan of Benelli, but my buddy has the Super Black eagle II and it will cycle anything. But now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it shoots 3.5" or not.

Thanks Mainehunt.

I have the same stock and forearm on my Remington 870 20 gauge that I use for clays but that is the brown version called "Nutmeg". These are Boyd's products and it really helps when you shoot alot. Takes the stress off of my wrist. I broke my wrist in three places when I about 12 years old and my bones in my right wrist don't allow me to bend my wrist sideways and down like holding a standard stock grip.

Mrthorpe, what kind of a 10ga side by side are you working on?  On older gun with 2 7/8" chambers or something modern with 3 1/2" chambers?  I like to use a Parker from 1893, much better on the tall one's compared to a 12ga.

Just for fun, here's a photo I took with my Mossberg and the first Crow I took with my custom 12 gauge reloads when I got back in to reloading last year. I took much pride in this downed bird because it was my own reload that did the job. Forgive my showing off, but, it's why I hunt Crows and reload my own shotshells.CROW MARCH 15 2012.jpgCROW MARCH 2 2012.jpgCrow Hammers.jpg

I have a plain Jane 500 with a field and (rifled) slug barrels.
