A couple of weeks ago, David and I had one heck of a crow shoot (for us) near the home of Bettie H, better known as the "pecan lady". The more I think about it the more remarkable that day was but first things first. Bettie is 81 years old, is widowed and has a yard full of 100+ year old pecan trees. You can see one of them here along with an avid crow hunter used to show perspective. She has 8 such trees and another 8 that are "volunteer" meaning they just grew up on their own. Her father planted the original 8 in the late 1800's.  About every other year they produce a huge pecan crop even breaking limbs due to weight. She has about 40 acres total, but the trees all sit within 100 yards of her home. We set up about 150 yards to the rear of her house in a fine spot with "ambush the pecan robbers" in mind. We did this 3 years ago and managed to drop 60+ crows in one morning so we were eager to "start the Gibson/Turpin music". Last year, NO pecans to lure in migratory birds.

Here is Tyrone, my pet dead feathered crow/decoy in one of his poses that tends to fool the live ones. Look closely and you can see wires from each foot that wrap around  small limbs. Those wires are also easily inserted into the ground if that is your set up. Other than the decoy being covered with feathers, I have no clue why he works so well, but he sure seems to. Tyrone just might be the Pied Piper of crow decoys. I use only one.

I am frustrated as I cannot get the 3rd and 4th picture I want to post in connection with this story.. will try Pecan Lady II .. another post.
