My family did the anual Christmas eve thing at my sisters house. Good food, lots of laughs and good times. My niece had brought home a friend of hers, this young man was from New Zealand. 19 years old and very respectful, manerly and basically raised right. I started right off the bat asking him about hunting and the military and just run of the mil good ol boy conversation. He told me that he had never fired a gun I said what do you mean you just don't hunt or what? This man told me that they don't have guns in New Zealand. I said do you have cops? He said yes but they only carry tazers He said he had always wanted to shoot a gun!!! Well come on upstairs son and we will skin one back and swab her plum out My brother in law picked up his 17 (it stays loaded for coyotes and such) slid open the sliding glass doors and he handed the 17 to the guy and said its loaded and here is the safety It was like handing a M-60 to a 2 year old The first round went thru the pool cover into the pool and the second went straight into the air!!!!!!! most of us scattered and started diggin a hasty fighting position. My brother in law grabbed the gun and then we had basic firearm 101 REAL QUICK.. I did talk to him later and ask if he had thought about the military, he said they didn't have one I ask what would happen if your country was attacked, he basicaly said that the Aussies would take care of them. Well at least you are in good hands there, I know for a fact what kind of fighting man they have. Sooo never assume that because a man is 19 that he has any common firearm sense about him. We here in this country take a lot for granted. The man had never touched a gun in 19 years of life. To me that is just not right. I can't wrap my brain around it. I bet they have tons of crows over there
That is funny!! I can see the scattering of the troop as that second round was discharged!!! Good for you guy for letting the young man shoot a little.

I had a similar experience with a foreign exchange student from Germany in the mid 90's. I am not sure if they have guns or not but this kid never held one either. We also took him to the local WMA to build duck blinds and stuff and he hated it.
I recommend NRA-endorsed personal liability and legal insurance for a variety of reasons, mainly if something goes real bad. Having it is sometimes a plus when requesting permission from owners to hunt on their land.
I hope to never use it, like any insurance (except for the big one, life insurance, can't avoid that one). I purchased it mainly because of CPL, but it's a good thing to have when using another's property or in cases like Highlander, Gandolf, and Chip describe which really go bad - Scary.
If you're interested, go to the NRA site and follow the links, which is a bit difficult sometimes.

Years ago one of my brother's wanted his wife to take a hunters safely course. In New York you had to fire a gun to complete the class. All he had was 12 gauge shotguns and high power rifles, 30-06, 270, 300 mag. at that time I collected 410 shotguns which I still have several of them. I let him borrow a old Mossgerg single shot bolt action 410 in pristine shape so she could complete her class, After the paper work was done they went out to the range. She was the first one to shoot, No problem. When she discharged that small shotgun she threw it onto the concrete floor and fu%# that stock up so much I practically gave it away, She was afraid of the noise.
Years before that happened my brother let a neighbor borrow an old Ithaca model 66 - 20 gauge single shot shotgun for his kid to use to go rabbit hunting, This was about 1975. The neighbors kid that went rabbit hunting was sixteen years old at that time, his younger brother who was about fourteen got pissed at another neighbor while they had that shotgun in their position and took that shotgun and was going to kill everyone at the apartment next door.
Guess what that gun got conficated by the local P.D. Only through being family friends through-out the local police department my brother got his shotgun back almost a year afterwards. If that happened today it would be held for evidence and never given back only to be auctioned off at their twice a year gun and other outdoor auctions.
My personal recommendation "Know Who You Let Shoot Your Gun!!! " 99.9%" of letting someone use a gun goes without a hitch, But that 1% of 1% will sink you.
