Hey guys, I have a Gibson Short Mag with the most god awful sticky reed in it.......I dont blow it with spit in my mouth or anything, I understand that would cause the problem.......I completely sry my mouth out before blowing it, and it still continues to stick. I have tried oiling the reed with a little vegetable oil, and that really didn't help. I have also tried calling Darrell, but I havent got an answer yet. I was wondering if anyone has any other tips or tricks to try with this call??

I can only get 3 or 4 blows on it, then it sticks fast to the tone board.....
I have an el cheapo that does the same, so I carry an extra call and find it does a lot better. I use the spare more than my primary call. I don't know of any other method besides oil to free them up. I guess just make sure it is a very small amount of oil so that the oil isn't causing it to stick. I'm interested to hear what others suggest.

You could also put a thin strip of cellotape 1-2 mm wide around the reed about 1cm from the tip. Works too.

I tried chap stick on it last night, and that seemed to help it out a lot..........I have done that with duck calls before. just apply a thin film on each side of the tone board, and both sides of the reed...........then wipe it lightly with a paper towel, so just a very thin film is left...........
I am going to try a few strategic dabs of glue too, and hopefully that fixes it once and for all....
I took my double reed duck call apart last night. It has a couple of small "dimples" stamped into the top reed.
You could imitate this by taking the reed and placing it on a block of wood. Put a nail on the reed and just barely tap it to cause a dimple in the reed. Don't drive it through. The drop of epoxy accomplishes the same thing by creating a slight bump to separate the two.
Take the reed and mouth pieces out of the call body. On each side of the reed, apply a small amount of Olive oil (not Popeye's girlfriend) and also on each inside of the mouth pieces.
This has worked for me, but may need a re-application of the oil when the reed begins to stick. Your wife may have some Olive oil in the kitchen. Good to cook with!
I have tried this this past winter, I put 2 dots of JB weld( all I had at the time) on each board, and it has worked real well. I had experimented with a lot of other things, and decided that if I made a couple little "posts" on each side, it may prevent the reed from sticking to one side of the board or the other, I was thinking in terms of drilling a hole and inserting a tiny piece of rod or something, then it dawned on me that a dab of epoxy could do the trick. I got to much on the first time and had to file it down some. Edit to say: 1 drop up towards tip of reeds is what Im leaning towards. Anyways, I think its a good idea. It doesnt seem to interfere with the air flow at all, or reed travel. I have 2 calls done up this way, and unless you absolutley fill it up with spit they keep going.

Man that Jon has got a way aint he?????? I dont know about the nail on the reed trick Sounds to me like you are gonna ruin a reed,,,,,, I've blown and modified the old Yentzen duck calls for 40 years, I've cut em sanded em but never punched one sounds disasterous to me
I have to report back to you guys on this. I used the glue trick, and it seems to have worked.....I blew the call all day Saturday without sticking it one time.........I put a drop of super glue on each part of the tone board. One where the end of the reed touches, and then one on each side right where the taper in the reed starts............seems to have 100% fixed the issue....
