The corn fields are dry enough to hunt so I went out to my favorite farm. Been hunting this one place almost 10 years. Crows still there and I hunt the edges of the corn fields in heavy brush. Today I only killed 11 but I had a blast. I put in IM choke, birds were high, shooting # 6 shot at 1200 fps 1 1/8 .The birds were not very cooperative they kept out of range. However I made three of my best shots today. One was about 40 yards high, flyin into the wind. He got over the setup and hovered there just long enough to get killed. He fell along way!!!! The other was two shots on the same crow. He came in about 30 yards and turned before getting to the setup which was about 12 yds from the blind. I hit him as he was hauling ass and he dumped about 50 yds from the blind still hopping around after he hit. For this exact moment, I just trade a 40 cal glock, for a Smith and Wesson 22 cal semi auto rifle. Looks just like smaller ar 15 has 25 rd clip. Ever try to run in cut corn after cattle have been roaming around in the muddy field!!Its a bitch. Well instead of chasing that damn bird I take out my trusty semi auto and with open sites hit that hopping dude on the fourth shot. I then proceeded to slowly walk and get the dead crow. That was a blast.
I am sure this has not happened to anyone else. You have been staring at the sky watching for crows, caller is off just resting. I was by myself and I just turn around to get my water jug and as I am turning back around no more than 25 feet from me this crow silently glides right thru my whole set up without making a sound. By the time I turned around and got the gun he was out of range. It never fails!! The other time I guarantee you see birds that are easy kills is when your packing up . LOL It was a great day lots of work to go byself but soooo much fun!!
Yes, it happens everytime I hunt. Caller off, silent glided comes. Sometimes I make my best shots on those silent ones because it's all reflex and instinctive shooting. :)
James Just like when nature calls while out deer hunting on a single digit degree day, you sit on your deer stand for five hours and take a minute to relieve yourself. as soon as you wipe, a deer will snort & take off from about forty feet away that you never heard walkin towards you. I bought a Marlin 882 stainless with a laminated stock in 17HMR for the same purpose and for squirrel hunting as well. I like it a lot better then my Marlin 882 in 22 mag. I have a 40 caliber Glock 23 that I sold last summer and bought a Colt 1911 Combat Commander to carry. I have six conceal carry handguns to choose from and several hunting handguns as well. I bought a TC Contender and have been buying extra barrels for it, Thats a fun little gun.
I can just imagine what them corn fields in Geaoga look like this time of the year. Atleast there are eleven bandits that are eliminated from the crowd. Not a bad day.

James, crows, ducks and geese have the uncanny ability to show up after long periods of time without seeing anything. Relieving yourself, pouring a cup of coffee, grabbing a bite to eat, walking out to pick up a dead bird outside the decoys and picking up your decoys to go home are the prime times for a bird to come in, usually silently. You are not alone, not by a long shot!
