Gordon is in Africa right now hunting. He just bagged a nice bull elephant with tusks weighing a little over 50 pounds each which is a decent bull in these times we now live in. He also got a very nice Eland which is a very large animal similar to a big ox. Bravo Gordon, very few of us get to bag an Elephant!

I applaud Mr. Krause on a very successful hunt. I would like to remind everyone that it is because of people like Gordon Krause that there are elephants and eland to hunt. It's been several generations of local and international conservationists like him that have put up the funding, time, and energies to provide protection and habitat for animals that would otherwise be eradicated for their skins, tusks, horns, or meat. It cost a goodly amount of money to get the opportunity to harvest any of these animals, and even more if you are successful. The bulk of this money goes to the retention of habitat and protection of these magnificent animals. You will never see a PETA or ASPCA member put up that kind of money to protect anything. The cost of harvesting one of these highly respected creatures pays for the protection of thousands. I'd like to rub walnut stain on my hands and arms and hire on as his gunbearer, but I'm afraid my blue eyes and deficiency in speaking Swahili would give me away. Oh well, I can dream, can't I?

Gordon just e-mailed me the photos from his safari. The photo with him and his bull elephant were outstanding in my opinion. I think most guys who hunt deer dream of going to Africa on a big game hunt.

It must have been a hunt of a lifetime. He is very fortunate. I am always surprised the founder of this website does not make his own posts and share this and his crow hunting adventures with us personnally.

I don't normally break my own rule and post non-crow related items, but since Bob started this thread I thought I'd fill in the blanks. I recently returned for a safari that was conducted in two areas of Zimbabwe, the Sengwa and Lake Kariba. Some photos below. Besides the trophies shown, we also had a ball shooting Guinea fowl, Francolin, and Sand Grouse at dusk. And for you avid bird hunters out there, if you ever get to Africa you must try those Sand Grouse coming to water the last 10 minutes before dark. Small, fast, and with fading light, they are a real challenge. I was lucky to hit 50% of what I shot at. It was indeed a hunt of a lifetime and it's going to be hard to top this as far as my hunting career goes. My only regret is that they wouldn't let me shoot any of those annoying Pied Crows that hung around camp. Some kind of protected bird there with the natives. All I could think of is how great a mount one would make on my wall at home with those white breasts.

Gordon is that a double (barrel) rifle on the right in the picture with the elephant?  If so what make is it and caliber?

Gordon,

The lighting in your elephant photo is very good with a few shadows, makes for a wonderful photo. You got a very nice eland, good close up photo of you with your trophy. Eland is very good eating I ate some when I was in Zambia on safari back in 1988.

So, when do I get the film footage of you bagging your bull elephant?

If you make another trip to Africa you must add a nice Sable Antelope (Common Sable) to your trophy room at home! They are truly magnificent to look at.

Here is a Common Sable from Zambia.

You should feel very satisfied sitting in your trophy room once your new mounts arrive within the next 12 to 18 months.

Actually that double wasn't mine (I wish) but belonged to my PH. It is a Verney Carron in 500 NE that he just got. I'm proud to say that he got his first scratch on it during this elephant hunt. I shot it a few times and it wasn't bad, not really much worse than my .375. I wouldn't want to do too much bench time with it though.

And thanks for the suggestion of going back for Sable Bob, but I haven't even gotten over my jet lag yet and despite the fortune I have accumulated from running Crow Busters, I'm now broke. And that hasn't even factored in the taxidermy and shipping yet. One day maybe, and Sable is high on my list. BTW, you are right about Eland. Better than steak!

Hi Gordon,

I don't know if I ever told you this before but my father had a .600 Nitro Express and a .577 Nitro Express both double rifles that he used on elephant and rhino. Both were Holland & Holland. Not even the PH would shoot that damn 60 cal. with a 900 grain bullet! He didn't want to develop a flinch, can't say as I blame him!

Talk to you soon.

Bob
