Did some scouting yesterday and shot a few crows late in the day. Found this concentration which were only 10 minutes from my home...but sadly well within the DMZ. They were at an old gravel pit. Water cover and food all within a mile. Those will be some healthy crows.
Bob A., that photo was taken about 2 miles "as the crow flies" from my home. This group is operating in a no fire zone as there are too many small acreages and homes around. That is my SUV in the foreground. I placed my FoxPro on top of my vehicle to get these photos.
M12, Please learn from my mistakes, if you ever plan on hunting THOSE birds in a fire zone area close by,, refrain from calling at them as a scouting means, they are much too smart and will likely not commit in the near future to your calls while hunting, one always does better when birds are fresh and not hunted/called too. Excellent photo and very motivational... We plan to get some "inbound crows" photo's this year, to share with some reluctant landowners to help convince them to give us access to whack them.
I shot 12 crows yesterday on a solo effort, in about ten minutes, using a "Hunter's Edge Dove Feeding Frenzy" decoy system, painted flat black, and my new FoxPro Shockwave. Both worked to perfection, along with my beloved Browning Maxus and Metro barrel. I will post a picture of that decoy system later. It hit 90+ degrees yesterday with high humidity to match and I believe these were local crows, with no migrants here as yet. Almost all of the these crows were vocal and I love their "Banzai charge" cries!
I drove 150 miles today to another hunting spot, but we only called in a handful of crows, dropping 4 of them, before a monsoon stopped combat operations. We do need the rain, so that is welcome for our farming and ranching friends.
Great image!! Received a call from a guy on Friday where we had picked up 79 in 2010.. He asked me to come by a have a look.. We were standing in his front yard on Sat at around 12:00 p.m. when a murder gathered ~150 yards away in a group of tall oaks in his pasture.. my best guess is 200+..If I had taken a picture of the group it would look very similar to your picture. We are shooting Sat morn.
