I hunt with an old M1 benelli and I have noticed that when I use my 28" barrel with it, it doesnt have the classic 12 ga report of BOOM. It has more of a crack or high pitch boom. I'm not the only one that notices it. Almost everybody that i hunt with says something about it. Its not that loud either. Why does it sound like that? I have a 391 with a 30" barrel and it is low pitch boom. Just makes me wonder. I have a friend that has a ruger red lable and it has the same high pitch crack.

I'll take a guess... It is my understanding that the sound a gun makes is two fold. First is the projectile breaking the sound barrier and the sonic boom that occurs. Second is the plunger effect that happens as the projectile exits the barrel and the air rushes back in. This is the same sound that a syringe makes as the plunger is rapidly pulled from it or the uncorking of a bottle.
Take those two effects and add in harmonic differences with barrel thicknesses and lengths and each gun will produce a different signature sound even if using identical ammo. If you were to record the sounds and analyze them on Audacity or some other editing program you will find they are producing different frequencies.
One other thing is the difference in the gas operation of the 391 and the inertia operation of the M1. Because the gasses rush around inside the guns differently will also effect the sound. My M1 sounds different also and I suspect this has something to do with it.
All in All... I have no idea... but was feeling sparky this morning.

LOL I never feel sparky in the A.M.. Good guess. I also have a 24" barrel for the M1 and it booms. I just thought it to be weird. I really like it cause it isn't that loud. I'm diggin the 391 as recoil is really not felt much but I hate the position of the safety. Shotguns turn me on!
