I was shooting a gold 10 with a Haydels "Decoy" choke and #3 steel shot. But I just installed a new Wolff spring kit into my old Ithaca so I am switching to the mag 10 for the rest of the season. For jump shooting woodies while squirrel hunting I would also be using an IC choke that I had made for use over decoys. More shot than the 12GA guys for sure, but with a lengthened forcing cone backbored barrel, open choke, short shot string, and good uniform pattern, it does no more damage than any 12 GA and definately kicks less if I am using the gas gun. I even use a spreader in the load sometimes.

I don't think dash likes the taste of crow. But he knows it is not his choice to make.

Dash helped me track a Turkey that morning.

And he does like the taste of squirrels. Almost too much. At retriever and pointer hunt tests both I am always chanting to myself, "please don't be a squirrel in that tree, please don't be a squirrel".

I was actually Squirrel and Wood Duck hunting late in the day, but have an area that seems to be a roost. The crows tend to pay more attention to the dog than me when we are in there. So shot a couple with the 10 GA for my dog Dash Rip Rock to retrieve. He was happy.

Great photo! I love it when crows' attention span is broken.

Did you ask Dash Rip Rock if it tasted different from squirrel? Wood duck? Maybe "like chicken?"biggrin

Were you using that 10ga (mag)? on wood ducks? What kind of loads did you used for the crows with it?

Thanks.  He is going to enjoy crow hunts as much as my older dog did, but I am not wanting him on too many until he matures more. I don't want him looking up and getting distracted at the black birds so much on upland hunts and tests. I remember my other Vizsla Blaze when she was young, one day after one of the first Crow hunts I took her on I had her in my boat on a lake moving along at a good clip. She saw a crow flying the shoreline and bailed out of the boat for it. I was probably moving at 20 to 30 mph at the time.  Dash does get that I'm in charge look about him often. But I think it is really a Dash likes to do what Dash wants to do look. He has that look in this picture, but he is just mad at me for making him sit still.

Dash with his big lizard. He was on the hunt and was barking at the big boy while my son and I finished it of.
