Sending a shout out to see if there are some crow hunters from Missouri that would like to discuss crow hunting and roosts in Missouri. Want to discuss things such as what the normal roosts sizes are for Missouri; does the roost size change significantly in different parts of the state; advice for locating roosts, etc. I live right in the central part of the state (Jefferson City) and I'm trying to figure what is the best direction to go to find the most birds. I'd like to have a 100+ bird day In the near future. From reading other post I'm wondering if I should plan a trip to Kansas. I don't know. but I know my goal for this year is to find a descent size roosts and setup on a flyway and have at least one big day. I'm only a few hours away from Kansas and Iowa. I'm open to any advice. Thanks!
Every roost I have found has been through scouting or by accident while driving. Keep your eyes open at dawn and dusk for large groups of crows and you may find a flyway or major feeding areas. You've just got to spend time on the back roads looking for crows.
I've hunted them in the Northwest part of the state for several years now and the areas I hunt are just about thinned out! Going to have to travel farther now to get birds that are more plentiful and less educated!

Was out a few days ago and saw very few but the ones I called in were in taller trees along the edges of fields! Shot at some but the trees got most of the shot.

May hop over the state line to Kansas but nonresident license is over $70 so just for crows may not. But if it was a good year for quail and pheasant wouldn't mind it!

It stinks but state hopping just might be the future of crow hunting at least around here. it might just be worth it if you want to justify crawling out of bed to face cold weather to get any decent shooting.I won't get up at 5 in the morning just to shoot one or two crows. It isn't worth it. Used to be the dumps held the crows year 'round-they didn't move too far. They did away with the dumps now the crows have to forage further and further away.Unless you got a huge farm nearby that dumps thousands of pounds of hot steaming cow doo doo in the back fields constantly.
If I felt pretty confident that I could locate a large crow roost in Kansas, I would probably pay the $70 and make the trip. Although I do find some enjoyment from running and gunning, I'd love to have a 100-200 day instead of something like a 5-15 day.
How far are you guys from Des Moines Iowa? 40 miles east of Des Moines is the town of Newton, Iowa. The roost is 6 miles south of I 80 at Newton. It's up to you now to scout out the territory.

There is a small roost 3,000 crows just northeast of you on the Mississippi River at Keokuk, Iowa but you can also hunt across the river in Illinois.
There is a roost at St. Louis as well you can see them flying past the Golden Arches in the early morning hours in St. Louis. They roost north of St. Louis so here again you have to do the leg work.

If you are coming in from the east (if you take I80) it should only be a little over 2 hours for you from central MO. They have a good cheap motel off of highway 6 east of Newton to stay if you really want to get to know the area. Good Hunting!

I'm about 4 hours from Newton. Close enough for me to plan a trip to Newton. My initial thought is to try to get up there either this month or next.
Thanks Bob for your reply! I'm honored to hear from you!
I have purchased your DVD's and CD's. I purchased your CD that contains the confidence and run and gun calls. I've loaded each sound file on my e-caller and have already had some success. I also purchased your Hand Calling Crows CD. I have lost track of how many times I've listened to it. I'm getting better with my hand call but still have a long way to go.
Finally, I've listened to your interview with The Predator Hunting Talk Cast so much that I've almost got it memorized! Lol! I seem to learn something new every time I listen to it. It's been a major help!
Got up this morning was going but with 4" of new snow, temperature around 0 and wind chill at -25 I think I'll wait til later in the week when the temps are suppose to be 30! I don't think I'd have much luck today with it that cold and windy! So far this year weather has sucked for any good days to hunt!

Bob, do you have any idea how large of a roost I might be able to find in mid Missouri? do you think it's possibly or unlikely for me to find 1,000 + bird roost or would u expect roosts only as big as a few hundred at best?
Missouri used to have dozens of small roosts all over the state 50 to 60 years ago according to the fish & game department. They ranged from several hundred on up to 20,000 or more.
Kansas City has a roost, they roost on the Missouri side of the river. Just take the 435 loop around KC either early in the morning or late afternoon. I never had the urge to hunt them there because it was to built up and you would get more "no's than yes's" but that is my feeling, I'm not always right, perhaps you could do ok in that territory.

Yeah don't know why the pics do that some times! Was a good day though especially with that one crow coming in straight and taking it in the face then taking a header in the snow.
