It was great to finally get out, put a beating on the youngsters, they were coming right into the wheelhouse, 15-20 yards mostly, quite a few direct hits with big clouds of feathers floating down.
they were quite fascinated by the triple play crow decoy, which ultimately lead to there demise. my blind was so invisible they never even had a clue I was there until the hot lead was pelting them, even then they didnt seem to be able to figure out where the gunfire was coming from.
several times they would turn towards me after the first shot, others would be coming in and see there friend hit the dirt and just keep coming anyways.(they like to help)
highlight of the day was a 70 yd shot that took out a spy/tattletail sitting on the top of a big pine, thought he was safe I guess.
I quickly screwed in a xtra full choke tube and slid a 3" magnum duck load ,gave it a shot and he didnt move, so thats when I figured he was pretty sick and getting worse, sure enough a couple minutes later he came tumbling through the branches all the way to the ground.
I paced it off when I walked over to retrieve him, also 3 bonus birds while out of the blind.
1st one came screaming over the spread, and after leaving he made the mistake of flying within 30 yds of me,so down he goes, go pick him up and head towards the blind and another dummy comes floating over the spread, me in full view 22 yds down he goes then repeat moments later with another "helper" 30 yds, thump on the dirt. great solo morning hunt, one of my better ones of late, 55 in the dirt not too many got away to warn the others
Nice work Low and Slow. Just north of you in Manitoba Canada. Stellar year for crow production this season it seems as I have had good shoots the past few weeks. Good crop coming your way...albeit a bit more educated.
Working on 2 smallish roosts in my area of operation, 500-1000 crows I would estimate. Bagged 29 hunting solo yesterday morning at first light. Furious half hour of shooting. Frustrating too as I had set up in a thick river bottom. Not only were the crows cooperating but the steady stream of wood ducks passing by was very tempting!
