I know this is not crow related, but as a proud dad I had to share it here. My son is also the reason I got into making crow calls. At around 2 years old he got my one good crow call and chewed up the mouth piece. After buying a number of calls that I didn't like I decided to try and make my own. That was many calls ago.
My son is 11 years old and hunted with me a few times last season and missed a doe at around 90 yards. I spent a lot of time looking for any sign that he had wounded the doe but found nothing. To prevent a repeat of this I put a small board on top of the stands rail so to be able to use bull bag as a shooting rest. It was opening afternoon on our land in Georgia. We got into our large stand over a small food plot and my son got my Encore in 270 win. set up in the bull bag shooting rest. I thought that he should get a chance at a doe. After about 1 hour of sitting I saw a leg move not 55 yards off in a thicket across the food plot from the stand. A few seconds later we both got a great shock of seeing horns. It took the deer what seemed like an hour to step out into the plot to give him a good shot. It was more like 3 or 4 minutes. When the buck did step out where the front half was in the open it was broad side at about 50 yards. I told him to take the shot and when he did the buck dropped in his tracks. I can not tell you how happy I was that my son had made a great shot. While we knew it had a rack it was a nice surprise to walk up on it and see that it was a really nice buck for where we hunt. Not only did he manage to take his first deer, but a nice buck which will be on the wall as well. Jack Picture of the sand my son helped me put up when he was 9. Here is a happy boy with his first deer.
Thanks for the comments everyone. My son getting his first deer has to be one of my proudest moments with him. We are headed back to deer camp this weekend to se if his luck holds up for a deer or a coyote.
Happy Hunting,
Jack Mincey
This last weekend was very windy and rained a bit on Saturday morning. My son got to pass up a shot on a small doe Friday afternoon. I was lucky an got another nice buck on Sunday morning so our deer hunting is through for this season being we have two in the freezer and don't need another one this year. This one is a 8 point with a small kicker off one of the g2's. Jack
