Got Asked The Question Again

While at a party last night the host and a (liberal) friend I haven't seen in awhile came up to a couple of us while we were discussing crow hunting.  He asked me what kind of hunting we were talking about, so I told him Crow Hunting.  The look on his face was one of bewilderment.  He gathered his thoughts, looked me straight in the eye and said "Demi, why would you ever want to hunt CROWS???"

Staring back at him I simply said "Mark, I hunt crows because nobody saved me any Passenger Pigeons, so the only high-volume wingshooting left in North America is crow hunting!"  As expected, he didn't appreciate the humor of the reply and responded, "So give me three good reasons to hunt crows, if you can."

I told him "First, crows are murdering eco-terrorists that do all sorts of damage to other wildlife such as birds, small mammals and other creatures.  For instance, they routinely raid songbird nests of eggs and baby birds.  Secondly, crows can devastate the farmers' crops that we hunt over and the owners are greatly appreciative of the service we provide to save their crops.  Thirdly, crows are one of the most challenging prey to hunt, and you must be a very good hunter to get a crow within shotgun range of you."

He accepted the first two reasons, but rejected the third.  I asked him if I could substitute the loss of the passenger pigeons for the third answer, but that ended the conversation.

I had a good time at his party!

Demi

P.S. We are still friends, but now he knows where I stand.

Crows don't "sometimes' anything-they are creatures of habit and one day I was astonished despite what i thought i knew about crows...this lone crow hit classified songbirds nest one after the other; where he put it all I'll never know but in his bill as i observed he had various crushed soupy egg yolks of various birds. I watched him smash the eggs at each nest...while it didn't get the entire colony of specifically red winged black birds and grackles-to say nothing of the robins and blue jays-he was back! they do not miss any opportunity to collect food...
This crap you got to listen to is beyond me...I mean I was raised in the country where crows, wood chucks and weasels and rats were a continuous problem..foxes...people who talk like your friend are programmed more connected to tv than the fields..

Nobody shoots crows in my theatre of operation and I like it that way! Got stopped by a Game Warden this past summer after a resident reported "many shots being fired". Warden said he had been doing his job for 24 years and could not remember ever coming across another shooting crows.

I.S.

We never will be able to fix Stupid, it amazes me that some of the most intellectual people can make decisions about hunting and other things without facts. I understand when they tell me that they do not like to hunt, heck most everything they do I don't like to do. But one thing always happens to the tree huggers when they set down in front of a ribeye steak, They grab the knife and fork! (lol)

M12,
Sounds great up there, have the same here on all but one spot. I still get a kick out of people's reactions when we tell them we've been crow hunting!
By the way scouted some picked soy beans and corn today about 400 acres total, actually counted over 200 at 10:30am going to try them in the morning. This area is less than a hour from home and the best we have done on these was 40 plus one morning last year.
Hoping now with more experience kill total will be better but these birds are sharp so we will see.

I.S. Is not "liberal friend" an oxymoron?

Your friend was right to reject to your third reason, crows are about the easiest animal to hunt and it's a lot less work than many other types of hunting. The three reasons to hunt them; it's legal; they are plentiful and it's enjoyable.  Chances are they will not like those answers so I suggest you add the fact you find shooting them better than taking Viagra.  After that the conversation should come to a close. biggrin

My hunting buddy cracks me up. Why do you hunt crows? He says, "Ice cream." Huh? "I like ice cream. Crows eat corn, and there is less of it for cows to eat."
