Pa looking to change crow season?

I edited the below article to get rid of everything but the crow hunting part, but the link is there for the article.

It won't happen in time for this year, but some bird hunting changes may be in store for Pennsylvania hunters.

. ........At the same time, the commission intends to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to expand crow hunting.

Crows are considered a migratory bird, so the Fish and Wildlife Service limits states to offering 124 days of hunting, all of them outside of the nesting season, Dunn said. Some hunters have been asking for a longer or different season, however.

Dunn said the commission will tweak the timing of the season as early as this year to add an extra weekend while approaching Fish and Wildlife about getting additional days in the future.

I don't see how they can gain any additional weekends?

They are already maxed out with the Fri,Sat,Sun From July 1 to the first or second weekend in April, at least real close by my count.....

What they should do is have it open in late October and run the 124 day season 7 days a week until the end of February. That is when you are going to get your best shooting! I suspect this would not happen because PA is such a big deer hunting state. The deer hunters would complain that the shooting will spook the deer.

We have a similar problem in (SW) MI. Most people I hunt and talk with agree that there are more crows seen during OCT than during the AUG-SEP later season (we also have the FEB-MAR season), but they also believe the season will never be moved into OCT due to early archery and other special deer seasons. Regular Gun season begins 15 NOV. Bummer.no

I would prefer it start Oct 1st and run til the 2nd weekend in April. We actually get some migrating flocks around end of March, 1st of April. The Feb/March/April season also gives us something to do during the Winter month's.
Trying to hunt crows here while the foliage is still on is tough, not to mention it's to hot in July/August to wear full camo......at least past mid morning. I would gladly sacrifice July/August/Sept for more days per week from Oct to April 15th.

I did see in the article they were planning to talk with US Fish & Wildlife, I wonder if they will attempt to gain more days per year to hunt ? If they do that, it could affect seasons in other states as well. That was the main point of posting the article on here, as I know there are only a few of us from Pa on this board, but if Pa gets US Fish & Game to allow more days per year, other states may take advantage of that and extend seasons as well.

Buzz:

I wish the Feds would lift crows off the Migratory Bird Act list, Period● In other words, make things the way they were before that Hawaiian Senator slipped them on the list (according to a legend I heard here one time), open season year-round, like rats, starlings, red squirrels, feral pigeons, etc.

I've asked my local and federal reps to do so, but they have more important things to do, like getting re-elected.

I like the string of weekends, since all of us aren't RETIRED like you! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I would be all for eliminating July and August and giving us 2 solid weeks in April, and maybe a solid week in the end of September/beginning of October , those are the periods that I kill the most crows

Somebody's got to do it! I'm just grateful to be upright and under my own power. BTW, one annoying thing I've noticed is that some of my favorite places to hunt are occupied during "weekdays" by annoying workers, causing me to have to shoot these places only on weekends. The nerveangered.gif   !!!

Re. crow seasons, why not go for the gold and have 365 days? Other than the Watermelons and tree-huggers, who would care?

Loving living in Alabama. Only problem is all the Deer hunters around here! If you so much as blow a Crow call before 10 a.m. they might just shoot you themselves.

It's amazing how deer hunting controls other seasons. I go out and hunt them until gun season arrives. To many crazies out there. Then get back into crow hunting day after gun season ends. There is bow season and muzzle but not many out still hunting. I would like more hunting in april, maybe 2 weeks then thats good for me.

August and September here are virtually useless ....unless you use rifles or arrows..there just ain't enough around to make it worth it in my view...but what do I know? (N-O-T-H-I-N-G)
