I recently purchased this barrel for my 12 ga. benelli. I also bought some boxes of subsonic federal shells but they are not much quieter than a regular load........what is/are the quietest? I want to pop them in my backyard.....Thanks Mike
I am not in the city. I live out in the country but wanted the quietest possible, effective shell for this barrel. The late Tom Knapp lived down the road from me. He shot a load at the Anoka Game Fair that was very quiet. I stopped by his place about 6 months before he passed and we discussed the barrel but I never asked him about the shell he shot.
Just hoping there was a quieter one than I purchased. Otherwise I think I wasted my money on this barrel.
Elk River Minnesota. I met Tom many years ago when I started the Pheasants Forever Kids Day program. I chatted with him at Game Fair and since I am not shy, I told him my plans. Tom said he would do it no matter what Benelli said! Normally there was a $1000.00 charge for him....he said, "buy me a Jim Beam and coke" and we will be good! We became friends after that. He MC'd all of our banquets........never asking for anything....but a Jim Beam.
With the Metro Barrel extension screwed in, you will get much quieter operation with the Federal "Metro Field" load (1 & 1/8 ounces of 7.5's @ 900FPS) or the Winchester Featherlite Load (26 gms of 8's at 980FPS) than any standard velocity or other "light" target loads. As Jason stated, this won't be "Hollywood" quiet but ear safe and it generally does not scare off crows that are outside of 75 yards or so. Inside a heavy canopy of fully leafed trees, crows inside of 50 yards are frequently fooled by our "Maxus Metro's".
I have a SilencerCo Salvo 12 on order for furry varmint shooting with my Benelli M4, and I'm interested to see what the sound signature is like with that device and a variety of shotshells, including the sub-sonic loads noted above.
Be aware the Browning Maxus functions, at least pretty well, with that Federal "Metro Field" load. Before Texas Matt figured that combination out, we were relegated to using pump guns. (No offense, Ted!)
Hi Bob,
I had the opportunity to meet Tom Knapp several times at Sporting Clay events and the SHOT Show over the years. He was a fine gentlemen and a great ambassador for the shotgun sports. His trick shooting exhibitions were real crowd pleasers and his booming voice was made for professional announcing. He would always get laughing about the fun of crow hunting, when I raised that topic. He is missed.
One of the elements of shot gun report attenuation, at least on the theater level, that Gadget Bob didn't reveal is the 'masking' provided by an electronic caller. Depending on the volume of the caller, Gadget's FoxPro equipment can fill the air and the attention of in-bound crows such that they often fly well within range of our long tubes before they realize something is amiss. A loud caller may not help your neighbor relations though.
I believe that in many cases if the guns' report was much quieter the many wouldn't object to guns being fired on their properties...especially ion a Sunday morning when they haven't gotten up yet!
Also you have war veterans who do not like guns period...these stupid bankers' wars are hurting us period!
