I read that during the Arkansas crow season, crows cannot be shot on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Does anyone here know what the rationale for this is? Thanx!
Basically it is to help extend the season such as the week end only shooting in areas like Massachussettes; New York state and Vermont in example...that idea...it stinks if you got a huge flights moving through though and to have to wait until the week end when they will be gone but that would apply up here not where you are...you just need to find them is it...
the "Federal" law migratory laws included crows in 1974 because of a stupid treaty with mexico which by the way doesn't "honor' treaties...to prevent the spring shooting of migratory water fowl..a major concern understandably...the Mexicans said okay so will you trade us? They like formalities so instead of say the green jay being totally protected they got the entire corvidae family which includes all the jays and ravens, and all the crow types...stinks given that there are so few crow shooters ...I don't think you will find more than a dozen here in nH of which but about half are "dedicated"...(DEAD a cated" in actively chasing down crows...)

Guess I'm a little slow, as I don't see how that extends the season. The only ones shooting crows on week days are us old guys that are trying to enjoy retirement. Weekends are for the working class. Although I have been there-done that, for most all my life, I now try to somewhat avoid weekend hunting. We have crows residing where I am year around. There is very little interest in hunting them as far as I can tell. Mainly us diehard hunters and shooters. The rest of the crowd focuses on Bambi. Perhaps we need a TV show on the Pursuit channel - NOT! By the way, nothing could make me live in Mass. or NY.
Sorry; not sure of the exact articulation...that "weird" type of season made sure people could hunt them when there are more around at the season is my guess....I prefer hunting them on a week day myself...always go some one asking me;"Wow man-you shooting crows Man? I didn't know you could do that!?" That would be a pheasant hunter...generally...
about the North east states mentioned? Yeah-you are RIGHT. They cannot do anything with crime and in fact many politicians are criminals themselves and that says it all in a nutshell...!
Under federal guidelines, crows can only be hunted 124 days per year in every state. If a state chooses to close crow hunting on several days during the week, that will allow them to spread out those 124 days across more of the calendar year.

The very idea of a 124 day to me makes little sense. But that's what "government" is for...NON-sense! But so it goes. They cannot manage foreign relations very well helping to stuff dictators into countries where it's easier to get the resources so they cannot be expected to function rationally anywhere else.
Look at this: in WW2 Germany had hardly much of an air force from about 1943 on. Not many tanks...at least from late 1943...and they lost after about 4 years of war or so....now we have these armor less and air force less to virtually non existent heavy material very small lightly armed "armies" and here we are still at it 12 years as in Viet Nam and now the middle east-how competent is that?
On another note I've still no idea how Russia dragged its' feet in Afghanistan...none what so ever....the Mujahideen were stubborn but far from a modern fighting force..another story to be sure...
But as for crows? I learned that the Fish and Game departments or whatever you call them where ever you are other than nesting don't know too much about the crow. Anyways the bulk of their income comes from fishing here...waterfowl predominates all else after deer hunting in my views. speaking of you folks out there that have odd seasons when the crows push through when it would be more ideal to shoot them then? It is because of deer hunting...Maine comes to Mind and Michigan. To say nothing of the seasons not based on -well-all the crows here came back after the snow was largely gone and that meant after the legal season was practically over...one year the crows passed through but a day or two left...and i mean thousands!
This tells me that little thought is given to crows. No doubt they'd be more popular if they were shot more but as every one has noted they aren't easily hunted...and geese has more meat.
Another tip for extending your season: Check your state laws relative to shooting crop deprivation crows. In South Carolina, the law states "Crows damaging crops may be taken at any time using non-toxic shot without a federal permit." It also defines crows damaging crops to be those over or travelling to or from crop fields.
Earlier, I also got a clarification from our state DNR that we could shoot crows with lead shot.
Good hunting!
Demi

Crows do do significant damage to crops but also devastate waterfowl nestlings and eggs...this somehow did not figure into the overall picture. However I am aware the western canadian provinces notable Sasquatchewan and so on are well aware of this and take lengths to reduce this predation...again too we cna figure the farm damage out est in example is very very serious...in example, the former "crow capital" of the United states had such severe damage from crows that farms were teetering on the brink of total bankruptcy and ruination as a result...the goverment in that or those states threw the rules out the window and allowed hunting virtually any way it could be conducted to the outrage of crow hunters which resulted in roost extinction meaning the roosts moved entirely or broke up leaving the area of otherwise godsends for having the massive numbers available to shoot at but none the less otherwise hurting the local farmers ..
Ultimately one shoe size fits all didn't apply in these areas...so we have a patch work of seasons across the states...politics and the weather determine the number of good days to do it...
This one crow went from nest to nest regarding blackbirds and robins primarily and i watched this while all these redwing blackbirds and grackles crowded the crow..it's as if the crow mapped it all out..eventually leaving to presumably feed its' young in the nest...i was amazed!!
Two years ago I found a turkey nest with all of the eggs destroyed. I had presumed it was coon or coyote. Last year I watched some crows pull out and eat every egg from a turkey nest that was about 140 yards from my house.
