My buddy and I have been working on the crows here in central Va for a few years now, we were hooked from day one and try to get out as much as possible while still not over hunting our favorite spots. As most in the area we are run and gun hunters as we really haven't seen any bug flyways, not like you guys in the center of the country.
We hunt groundhogs, other varmints and of course all the regular game around here but really enjoy wingshootung. We've been looking at taking a hunting trip this year, looked at elk, mule deer, antelope with some upland added on, etc and couldn't decide. Then we thought about crows, we've never seen the big flyways where you have the possibility of sitting in a stand all day and just going to work on them and figured it probably be one of the most enjoyable hunts we could take a trip for. So we're wondering, does anyone actually do crow 'guide' service or is there anyne out there that might put a couple guys from Va on a good fly way or spot?
The fish and game department or department of natural resources might know...just call or write or email...I knoiw Virgina has lot of crows there...you also have fish crows those weird smaller crows with the weird nasal caw that sounds like "Uh-uh"...
Th elast thing you want to do while crow hunting is to shoot out your roosts..now the crows will go somewhere else as much as an hour away-now does that sound like fun?!
There are horror stories on here where one hunter had a huge million bird roost only about ten minutes away but some yahoos thought they were geniuses and shot them right in the roost and the remainder bailed to some other county two-three hours away! Better to just find a flyway that does not threaten the roost..you want the crows to be there. A good distance depending upon the size of the roost might be a mile away generally speaking...I am lucky that I have two roosts (in fall only-they leave when the snows arrive)-and despite their ridiculously small numbers compared to almost anywhere outside the state-it is all I have....provides some shooting for what that is worth-I still won't go and shoot it up...
One roost in Oklahoma boasted as much as 11 million crows(until about 1980) but these "heroes' went in and shot it all up...no crows in that area at all now I understand so go ahead-ruin your prize crow roost. You'll understand when you got to go two hours or so to find it again!
Just saw your post! I am the head guide for Hickory Creek Outfitters in Southeast Kansas. This winter when I was guiding predator hunts I noticed the abundance of crows I was seeing. Particularly flying into my sets. I started paying attention when I was driving around my properties and really noticed the number of crows. We have 50,000 private acres and are going to offer crow hunts this winter. Check out our website www.hunthickorycreek.com and call me on my cell phone 734-474-5148 if you have any questions! My name is Max Griffin!
