Involved in a bit of run and gun tactics as of late, mostly across mixed farming country. Shot a bandit with a beak full of wheat today and I thought I'd share the moment. Would have to be seeded grain as I see crows feeding across black seeded fields. Likely smart enough to calculate where each individual kernel will be and dig them out. Close up pic of crow with a yap full of wheat and magpie shot from the same stop.
I've been wanting to try the Run & Gun tactics for a while, just keep letting things get in the way of it. Great Pics as usual in your posts, Thanks for sharing the hunt.
Just looked up average number of seeds per head of wheat (20 to 50) could not find if one seed would produce more than one head, but I think they can and will from what I have read. Just curious with your crow having 5 kernels in his beak, what he cost the farmer in money with what was just in his beak. You can tell things are slow but still curious and will try to get a cost figured out.
Butch, I'll leave the calculations to the "egg heads" in our following Luckily for the agricultural community crows are spread out across the countryside in breeding pairs and small non breeding groups. I don't feel depredation on freshly seeded fields to be much of an issue at this time.
