Opening day in KY

Season opens tomorrow morning here and I can't he more excited. Went out to the WMA I plan to hunt dove at and saw that they finally mowed the millet and sunflowers. The crow where in very small groups (2-3 being the larger of them) mostly singles and flying in from all directions every 5-10 minutes. I am hoping this works out in my favor and I can set a new personal best. They haven't been shot at since last February.

Complete bust!!!! Got here early and was set up 30 min before first light. Within 45 minutes dove hunters where showing up and that wasn't a big deal but some of them where walking right through my decoys. I mean come on!!! There are 4 huge fields here and they walk right through them. Unfortunately opening day for dove season draws out the "hunters" who come out for only this one day then don't return till next year. I should have expected this somewhat but not to this extent. Some things should be common courtesy like not waking through another man's set 5 hours before your hunting season opens.

For me it was the pheasant hunters tat the time many years ago..I couldn't believe it-how in the hell can they just do that?! So anyways I began hunting during the week day and that worked but eventually this area dried up....just as well....

Tom,

In your last post "began hunting during the week days" is very note worthy. If a guy works nights and can hunt during the week days he can distance himself from the weekend warriors. This is exactly why I worked nights for almost 18 years when the crows were all local in the old days.

Monday was the best day for that for me anyways because  here they do that ten hour day so Friday is an extra day off and just guess what? The goose hunters began showing up! that is who I saw in one area I frequented...if they put their geese decoys with our crow decoys  then what a combination...but here again  I'd have to buy waterfowl stamps and I don't hunt water fowl anymore...

Hi Tom,

I always liked Thursday or Friday because it was 4 to 5 days from the past weekend and gave some of the birds a little break.

Makes perfect sense...very logical...but....what i was seeing at the time is they came in on a Monday where you didn't see hardly any  on a Sunday as if they'd never been there before and oh how it worked! Your hunting is where you don't see anybody around so you can take your pick....you got so many areas to shoot at -there is land aplenty for everyone...that isn't the case here! One area i would go in late October to avoid all the joggers and hikers and bicycle crowd....this way no shot is dumped on anyone!

Being retired I go to the gun range during the weekends and hunt weekdays. If I'm not hunting I'm usually at the gun range. I enjoy retirement. My wife shoots as well which makes it nice. biggrin

Oh wow you must be just north of the river then. If you ever want to come down to Ky and go after some crow let me know and we can meet up. I plan on hitting up some places close to there this year too.
