Dove decoy turned into crow decoy
Permalink

The search has continues for a good motion crow decoy. I was town between the mojo and buster decoys. Mojo has really good quality and battery life but it's a spinner and buster is great but I keep hearing it will eat batteries like there is no tomorrow (3 hours max on a fresh set). Yesterday I was going through my bag I have for dove decoy and while looking at a flapper I have for them I thought why not paint it black. So I did. The only draw back I can see is its size. It's smaller then a crow but it's actually much bigger then a dove. The batteries last at least 8 hours so far (haven't killed the first set yet). I will post a video when I get home and let you all see it. I hope it works out well. I am going to try it this weekend and see what happens. For less then $30 a piece I have really high hopes for this to pan out.

Why not just buy a flapper (or make one) ? Then use either a shot bird in it, or a proper floater/flapper decoy.
Then just connect up to a 1.2ah battery for 4-5 hrs (using a timer and speed controller) or 2.4ah
Or what I use is just a 7ah which lasts three days between charges :)

Here's an FF3 flapper with a decoy on it. Using a real shot bird is even better.
He's now producing "the Rolls Royce" of flappers, the FF5, but there is a 4-6 month waiting list on those models

I'm working (slowly) on a Buffy Bat to adapt it for a flapper. Wingspan is a bit small, but it's fun.

The 4-6 month wait is the deal breaker for me. I wouldn't be able to use it till next season and I am a little impatient when it comes to new toys. I have thought about the stands to use dead birds since I am trying to keep how much I have to carry into the field. Only concern is how well they work in very low wind. It's easy for us to not have anything above 2-3 mph. Would that be enough to move the bird?

That would be enough on the Hydra flap and pro flap decoys

that said, they are EXTREMELY fragile, so need to be taken care of, I.e, transported in a box

Other flappers are available. Not in the class of the FF series, but do still work well.

Oh yeah then its just a matter of time until I would end up breaking one of those. I wonder what game of wite is best to try and make your own flappers with dead birds.

  are surprisingly sturdy flappers.

I have three ultra cheap ones (knew they didn't work when I bought them, and hence they were cheap)

It was a case of fit a good motor/gearbox (300-400rpm) bend the arms, glue some washers in place, fit a speed controller and timer, and now they work perfectly. And still only 2/3rds the price of a "good one" from the shop :)

to make a flapper yourself, you would need some 1/2-3/4" tubing to provide a stand. A piece of 1" internal dia tubing to provide a housing for the motor, then some 1/4" dia rod to make a spike to fit the dead bird on (enter through rectum, push into brain)

then some flat bar (mechano is good) to make a swivel joint onto the shaft. Then two rods 3/16" to make the arms to lift and drop the wings

once that's all done, fit a speed controller and timer, a battery, and away you go.

Paint black for corvids, grey for doves

I bought the lucky duck flapping dove decoy the other day. I painted it flat black then flocked it. If that don't work I'm just gonna staple one of my old kites to it. That will get the job done I'm sure.

I think the dove flappers I have are lucky duck also. I don't know why but flocking it didn't even cross my mind. I even have some from touching up my decoys for this season. I might have to go ahead and do that too.

Here is the image of the decoy I painted next to one of my FF decoys for size comparison. The FF decoys are rather large compared to an actual crow.

Funny enough, we found in the UK that larger decoys actually work BETTER on dove and crow.

Makes them be seen from much farther away.

by the time they get close enough to realise they are looking at Raven size, they are dead meat
