I have a property about an hour away that will hold a few birds on occasion. The conditions have to be right and since it is an hour away it can be hard to keep scouted. I had a bit of time recently so I took a scouting trip and saw what I thought would be a huntable amount of birds. I broke a brake line on the truck on the way home from scouting. But, that is a different story for a different day...I made it home safely.
My hunting partner would be my 5 year old daughter. She was rather fired up and jumped out of bed at 5am. We packed some snacks and off we went. Her main goal was to retrieve the birds shot. Secondary goal was to shoot a crow with each of her guns. Yes EACH. I like her style.
Hunting conditions were good minus wind. Mostly cloudy, no rain, temps in the 60s, very light wind. I would have preferred another 5-10 mph breeze to give the birds a more predictable approach to the set. Gotta complain about something right? We set up on a hay field that was cut maybe a week ago. The birds were not really using it anymore but there was bandit activity in a neighboring block.
The morning started strong, I shot 4 out of a group of 6. I do not remember pulling more than a couple quads in my life, game on! Here is a mighty hunter with 2 of the first birds of the morning.
Here is my hunting partner waiting for the next group. Note the 2 guns she required to have along. AND, birds were taken with each.
....another successful retrieve! The princess gloves are multi-functional. They are her preferred bird handling, worm digging, and horse poop scooping gloves.
We ended the morning with 31. Not sure why, but there always seems to be 1 crazy bird that is attracted to a numeric layout of his fallen brothers.
BH and daughter, selfie style.
Good thing we could drive up to this set. My guide was having a hard time pulling the gear.
Hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as we enjoyed making it.
I told her I was going to pack her a crow sandwich for her kindergarten lunch this week. She said "ok, but I think I want crow tacos instead."
Great field photo story! She's much taller than her (winter) photo a while back. What cool guns she has. And the "Sled of Death" in action--what could be better, except 31!

I was gona say it doesn't get any better but it does! My daughter is 37 or 29 by her calculations, have great memories of her at that wonderful age. She would only fish with me didn't take to huntin. Have to give you a heads up if you ever take her at this age to a MLB game by yourself don't let her drink anything! I made this mistake and thankfully a very nice silver haired lady saved the day.
Your post and pics brought back a lot of memories, Thanks
Now back to the hunt, great day and your partner is Top Notch for sure! Congrats
This is the best post I have read in a very long time! I have a 3 year old and have had him out a few times and really can't wait to have him out on family hunts like this. Good for you for getting your daughter involved! Oh, and her pink gun is just awesome! Lol

Went to an open house for a local outdoor center tonight. They have lots of educational and kid oriented items there. LOTS of mounts too....yes, even a mount of our beloved American crow.
Here is a pic of BH and the girl who left her pink gun at home:
