First outing of the season

I've been keeping an eye on a new area close to home. When I say close I'm talking 140 miles from home.

First afternoon shoot I shot 277 crows from 12:00 noon to 7:10 p.m. with 377 trap loads in # 8 shot.

Went out the next morning and shot 71 in the morning and 62 in the afternoon with 200 trap loads; 133 for the day.

The third afternoon I got setup at 3:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to around 6:00 p.m. I had 51 crows down and then they really started to move! From 6:10 p.m. to 7:10 p.m. it was as fast as I could keep the gun loaded. The last 45 minutes I was killing 6 and 7 crows a minute! Just as I finished loading the shotgun there were more targets of opportunity. Many many times I would come up and shoot four delayed singles, load the gun, come up again about 5 or six seconds later and do it again over and over again during this shoot. I shot a little over 200 crows in 45 to 60 minutes time, I was getting mobbed, they just kept coming in anywhere from 3 to 4, 6 and 8, sometimes a dozen or more at a time. I used 353 trap loads in # 8's. I used both a one ounce load and my standard 1 1/8th ounce load for 270 crows that afternoon.

I really do not enjoy being mobbed, it's like your in a killing frenzy to try and keep up. I much prefer it more drawn out so you enjoy each shot

Come to SW MI and you will be so full of enjoyment over the duration between shots, that they'll have to take you to the hospital just so you recover from your happiness overdose.

(Just kidding; about the hospital, I mean wink)

Hey OA, perhaps the psych ward at the State Hospital?

The season closes on November 16th for the deer hunters in my new area so I decided to give this area a try. It opens up again on December 9th.

I had to hold myself back while the shooting was slow between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. because I had several mallards passing by with in easy range for a trap load!

I can't wait for my first triple digit day. I am with you on the mobbed part. It is from from time to time but I would take a steady pace of birds over a few hours over insane shooting for 30 min.

Jacob,

Providing you have enough of a crow population in you're area you will get there. Much depends on how much time you get to spend in the field each season and getting to know the area. The better you get at wing shooting the easier it will get to reach 100 or more because less birds will be missed.

Hi Butch,

Dick called last night, he just got back from spending a month and a half in Saskatchewan, Canada hunting ducks and geese. He spent two weeks in North Dakota hunting ducks on his way home to Ohio. He said that Saskatchewan was very poor this season, worst he has seen in 22 years of hunting up there. Dick said every day was bluebird weather with little to no wind to get the birds moving.

Dick turned 81 this month and has more pep than the Duracell Bunny! Dick is an outstanding crow partner, I enjoy his company immensely.
