Picked up some Federal 12ga. 7 1/2  1 1/8 for 4.94 a box for the coming year. Guys it felt good to start the process of gettin stuff ready for the up-coming season of bustin crows. Hope you Gentlemen have some "Great hunts " this year.

I just picked up an additional 2,000 rounds of Federal ammo at Walmart myself last week. The shopping cart would only go straight with all that weight in the cart.

Always a good Idea Butch to sock ammo away when you can buy it at a good price. I bought nothing but 8's.

Bob,

Mine was from the same store, hard to pass it up and I will go back for more biggrin

Ted,

Thats a big difference maybe you can catch them on sale, don't know about you but the only thing better than shootin crows is shootin them "cheaper"

Butch, I still have a couple hundred pounds of 7 1/2 shot in my garage. Guess I 'll be rolling my own for a bit longer.

Redditch,

Sounds like a good problem to have! I enjoy your Huntin reports, keep puttin em on the ground. Still a couple months away for us as the heat index was well over 100 here today.

I picked up a case of of the same Federal today. Will go next week (pay day) and get two more cases. They look like the same exact shell Federal sells in the 100rd (4 box) box for $21.74, just different packaging.

Patterned the Federal Top Gun 3 dram promo loads a few years back and these patterned very well within the typical 40 yard parametre. I then cut one open to find these stuffed with very sub standard shot. many were oblong and I would estimate anywhere from 7 shot to 8 or 8 1/2 inside variation. I am far from an expert though. I do shoot a fair number of Top Guns though, they are common up here and about the cheapest 12 gauge ammo one can scrounge up. Fine for crows within reasonable range IMO.

Ted,

I'll pattern these and check one, hope they perform well. If not the grandson loves to pull the trigger so it won't matter to him biggrin

BH,

Hope everyone has good Huntin this year, and would like to give some good reports myself. These locals around the house had better watch out, been thinking about gettin the " Red Ryder" out and bouncing a bb off ones head just to shoot at something
biggrin

Red, what shot size and weight do you gentlemen across the pond favour for crow destruction?

For rook and carrion crow we prefer 5 shot if at any range, otheir wise 6 shot will do.
For pigeon, jackdaw, and magpie, 7 1/2 or 8 will do
I have one small area where you would think the crows are armour plated, but it's just their plumage is very heavy and thick, due to being on the Atlantic coast. It's an3-5 mile area, and there I have to use 36gr #4 shot to be sure of killing them. Basically it comes down to our crows even over decoys often being 50 metre+ distance so need good patterns and heavy shot to ensure dropping them, and even then get the odd ones, usually about 15-20% that are hard hit but fly on. Of you watch them long enough, you often see them suddenly drop from the sky 100-500 or even more metres away as they have bled out.
But rarely do you have the luxury of watching them, as you have to duck out of sight waiting for the next ones to come in
