Scott, is the weather starting to get cooler in the mornings where you are located yet? It was 57 degrees here in Kansas yesterday morning, I had to put on a long sleeve shirt to drink my coffee on the back porch.
Went for a short hunt yesterday evening near my home. Never fired a shot but at least 500 moved along a hedge row about a mile to the south. These are roost bound birds that camp out in a large metro area. I will be along the tree line next time. Mosquitoes are fierce taking some of that allure away from the prospect.

3 out of 4 is 75% and I will take that average any day. You should see a difference in the weather with in the next few weeks.
So what gauge sxs did you use on Saturday, 10 or 12 ? You own any sxs with the old dog eared hammers on them? My father used to pass shoot Canadian Geese with an old Boss 10 gauge sxs with dog ears on it. He had a pair of French sxs in 14 gauge with dog ears but he never shot them.
My old New York days hunting crows I remember quite well how bad the misquitoes would get when I hunted durung July, August and September. Before I left New York for Kansas I kept hunting them later in the year to avoid fighting the misquitoes. By the time I was in my early 20's I would not even start until mid September but even then you had to spray on bug dope. If I drove from my dad's house in New York to the Canadian border (approx. 300 miles) in late September the misquitoes were no problem that far north at that time of year.

Bob,
I use my " light 10 ga" it's a parker 10 ga made in 1889 built on a 12 ga frame (2 frame) with 1 1/8 th oz of 6's the guns weighs 8 3/4 lbs with 30 in barrels choked imp mod in both barrels. No I don't have any hammer guns now, I did have one a few years ago but sold it. I can't wait for this weather to break and all the bugs are gone!
Scott, I understand your nostalgia using those fine old side by sides from a bye gone era. It's more than just the shooting for you and Pete it's keeping those guns alive and immersing yourself in that time period. If your 10 gauge Parker weighs in at 8 3/4 pounds shooting a 1 1/8th ounce load I would think the recoil would be less than a 20 gauge with that firearm.
Every generation yearns for the "good ole days" when the country was far different than it is today. Just think of the waterfowling in 1889 I don't even think they had bag limits much before 1912. Of course bag limits never slowed me down when they were flying good that day.

Bob,
Yes very light recoil. In 1889 this gun was one of the 1st 50 hammerless 10 ga parker made. I can't even think of all the game this gun brought home over the last 127 years, and still is.
I have killed turkeys, ducks and geese never mined all the crows.
My second cousin who was in WW2 collected dueling pistols and repeating rifles from about 1873 on. He knew the history on many of the firearms that he owned such as previous owners. He used to use some black powder SXS in both 10 & 12 gauge but you had to wait for the smoke to clear to see anything! He was the one who got me interested in skeet shooting when I was 13 years old. My father and him were hunting buddy's.
Did most of the Parkers have double triggers on them? Winchester made a few model 21's with double triggers but most were single trigger. The Parker (in 12 gauge) I had also had double triggers which I liked rather than having to go to a selector on the safety or inside the trigger guard.

I have yet to see any number of crow like that at one time (granted this is only my 4th year crow hunting). We have plenty of them they are always just in smaller groups. Good part is you don't have to travel far to hunt a new set of birds once a spot is burnt out. Waiting for the weather here to get better too. Still warm cool in the am but the bugs are still bad. Deer season opened on the 3rd here so that's all I'm doing until it cools off more. Hopefully I will tag out early this year and have more time for crow.
The season opened here in Oklahoma so I got out and set up on a place where I had success run and gun hunting before. I put a few decoys out and set up a blind. I only had 5 all spaced out nice. I went 3 for 5. I have a better spot eyed for in the morning. Hopefully it will make for more numbers.

When I am out scouting I take photos if there is something that I think would make a nice photo to remember.
Those pics are a thing of beauty!
