Out of boredom I googled (since Im new to and starting out) "crow hunting". I came across a few pictures of birds, hunters, and some REALLY REALLY long gun barrels! I mean they look to be 4-5 feet long, no joke!
Can some one explain this? Are these joke pictures? Or is this some specialty thing?
You are looking at "Metro Barrels" and they are barrel extensions (think extra long choke tubes) that greatly reduce noise. If you use sub sonic cartridges with them, you don't even need ear protection.
I've shot them a couple of times and they are surprisingly easy to swing.
They have their place, but for most shooters, these are novelty items.
Hope this helps.

Interesting, but wouldnt that stress the hell out of the muzzle/choke area of the regular barrel.
Where would you buy a barrel extension like that?
How do they effect the pattern?
They work well and have not caused any problems for us as far as stress in the choke thread area on various shotguns including Remington 870's and Browning Maxus's.
Recently we have began using Herter's Low Recoil loads - 1 1/8 ounces of 7 1/2 at 1050FPS will excellent results on crows.
