Crow hunting and hawks/owls

Me and a buddy went crow hunting saturday morning and we saw and heard three hawks close to our blind. They even flew over a few times. Does the presence of hawks/owls help or hurt you while crow hunting. If they hurt your hunting then how do you run them off whithout shooting at them?

Hi Lefty,

Hawks do seem to be attracted to the activity crow hunting provides. I cant say Ive ever felt that a few extra hawks in the area hurt the hunting....or helped the hunting.

Those are my thoughts. Others may disagree.

Hi Lefty,

Hawks and owls frequently respond to our crow calling.  Their presence does not deter crows approaching based on my observations.  When buzzards start circling, usually later in the morning, I do think that means few crows will be coming to the call.

Regards,

Im pretty sure the hawks we saw, 3 or 4, were already there when we set up in the morning. Or they came in after the real crows started talking first thing in the morning.
Nonetheless I thought it was pretty interesting.

I'm also of the opinion that hawks do no harm to the hunt. In fact, they often add a bit to comic relief while in the blind. We've seen several hawk attacks on our decoys and cripples! Great fun to watch.

I had hawks on me yesterday and today while hunting. They seem to love those crow sounds.

A very familiar scene here!

Just Monday a Bald Eagle flew about  10:00 o'clock high and a crow with its' mouth full formerly reluctant to cross over( half mile away?) decided to show that eagle who was king...the crow came over high at 12:00 o'clock  and glided stiffly into the trees no doubt providing a meal for that omnipresent bald eagle! ( thank you baldy!)

The eagle soared over the river (it had been watching the river closely between harassing the crows; attempting to get one to make fatal mistake) and the crow was aiming to cut it off for a little harassment  but its' lucky number  high brass 5 and most effectively at that!

I had one try to take my mojo voodoo dove this season. The have been swooping in my crow decoys and just can't understand why they are so still. My decoys have proved their courage by not bowing to swooping hawks!

Years go I was blowing the death cry and I kept hearing what sounded like some big bird  through my hearing protectors at close range.....then it went right to the juvenile trees  and sat amongst my plastic decoys-a blue gray adult male goshawk! He stared and stared then decided to attack the decoy on the ground but lifted before striking then saw another one a little further away then shot into the woods gliding typical of that species....this was years ago and it blew me away!

Quite often little sharp shinned hawks regularly dived and swooped at my decoys. This is crazy  because a sharpie is only the size of a blue jay and no real chance of taking an adult healthy crow but yet they routinely attack  a dozen crows or more simply being little more than an annoyance. The game on; a crow will deliberately get the  sharpie to glide in from behind where another crow slips in and tries to pull its tail...this game usually lasts  a little while before the sharpie gives up and leaves...

A red tail would never do that despite being a much bigger hawk.....

Hawks often will join up to harass an owl however; even the coopers hawk swirling and diving at an owl decoy!
