I'm definitely training some of them for sure. I've hunted this area 4 times in the last 5 weeks and I've had other hunters around me 2 of those times. Of the 4 times, there were 3 different set-ups / Fields but overall the same birds call them the dump flight. I've hunted the northern flight twice which have been bigger kills and the river flight 3 times. (I think). So they get some training, I try to get creative on the set-ups to entice them in, also I have no problem killing the caller if a bird is on a line heading in. I could improve a couple things about half my decoys need reflocking and I need to replace or paint my tree hanger hooks black. I had several flare off the plastic decoys today if they'd of been flocked I might of had a better chance. Anyway back at them tomorrow morning.

Quick hunt this morning, pulled up at about 8:30 AM , 18 more down and out, Hunted the Camp Ground again. Another group set up about 1/2 mile away and they got a few busts. Majority today were singles again although they work in really tight when they commit. Had a few fly by that acted like I didn't exist. Well guess I'll let them rest for another 4 days, Dang work anyway. Mid-60's here today again , got the bike out and maybe cruise around and do some scouting. The photo I attached was from the last time I hunted here which was Jan. 20th. Anyway had a few that were landing in the tree right in front of the truck as I popped up from the layout!
How do you hunt educated birds with very much success? Anytime I've ever hunted what I consider to have been educated birds it's been a terrible experience I normally just go right back to the truth. I've come to call it "bashing" it's how I've explained it to people atleast, they sit as far away as they can and still see the caller wether it be 50 yards or 500 yards and just basically talk over my caller the whole time so I just leave. I'm sure this happens everywhere but I've never talked about it to another crow hunter just friends and family who don't hunt them so they habe nothing to really add.

Most of the time I'm hunting on or close to a flyway that I can pull birds from. There's not a ton of birds but enough fresh ones coming from the roosting areas in town to keep things interesting. The educated birds here will fly high over you, or will be on a line and flare 70 to 80 yards out. Friday we weren't on a flyway, had the caller off most of the time. Killed a couple real quick, then a couple set-up a few hundred yards away and we could here them, like you mentioned. I leave my call off in these situations and wait. There calling will bring in different birds and if they're close enough you can switch your caller back on and pull them in. Make the shot , have some more coffee and listen for the next bird to get close. Still got seven but took a couple hours. If you have a good set-up they'll actually sneak in on ya and might not get a shot or you'll see them first and smoke'm. Keep after them though!

Finally got back out this morning for a couple hours. Look's like a lot of our birds are heading north. There was enough action though to let the dog get in some retrieves. The ones that did come in were nice easy shots. Only one got away that I tried, every time I shot it changed direction so I was probably leading a shade to much. We're down to two weeks for this season!
A might cold this morning starting out, whopping 17 degrees, Had to use the drill to put holes in the ground for the decoys. Other then the weather man totally missing the wind direction again it was a good hunt. There's still quite a few that are eager to decoy in. Got another warm-up coming this weekend sometimes that's not for the best.
Another decent morning , flights are getting over earlier in the mornings. When it's nice like this out seems they like to fly about 40 min. before sun rise. Kind of Windy today so it was highly advisable to connect on the first shot.
Well had a blast chasing the white devils? Put a huntin on them until Mother nature decided to remind us it's still winter. Knocked 86 the first day and the 61 second day. OMG though it was a total blast shooting these birds. Can't wait to do it again.

Fortunately we didn't have to, because we were with an outfitter. We asked the same question and the guide said it took 2 of them 6 hours to get it set-up.

Hahaha, 6 hours to set up a decoy spread! Man, you worn out before the hunt even happens.
I have ZERO waterfowl experience, I can barely spell steel shot or d-u-c-k. When do you set out the decoys? Early early morning before the hunt or the evening before the hunt?
The guys I hunted with have at least 13 different fields all set-up and ready over about a 70 mile stretch going east to west and they leave them set-up for a few weeks. Personally when I go out around here I'll go out plenty early depending how much help I got. But for ducks and Canadian geese I don't need that big of spread. Then we'll pick up at the end of the hunt.

Oh we still had to pay the state their fee! Never really thought much about it but our guide was saying that SD main source of income is tourism. There's some Manufacturing , but summer vacationers and hunting bring in a huge amount for the state.

Finally back out on the crows, giving them an extra week off seemed to help this morning. Had lots of opportunities to heat up the barrel. Snows melting fast not sure what the plan is for tomorrow. Most likely have to walk in a ways no matter where I go because of the Muck!
Decent hunt this morning for late season, Hunted the river and these birds are getting fairly spooky. Had a few that we're on a bee line and they just worked around to the outside of range. Did get to drop one of those Pie-bald birds I saw on another thread. Didn't realize until I saw him in Bucks mouth on the retrieve. So another fun Day on the books.

Cool-looking bird. Lots of white!

My hunts are relatively quick , and I enjoy actual hunting more then shooting trap or skeet. And it gives me and the dog a workout. Those sit-ups in the blind get tough after a while for this old guy!
