Hi, new here and first post. Does anyone know if Jerry Tomlin still offers Georgia guided crow hunts? Thanks so much

Todd,

Jerry Tomlin no longer maintains his Crow Roost website but Yes, he is still guiding throughout Georgia and parts on South Carolina.  With the season drawing close to the end, he may have a pretty full schedule, but he is also good at calling when he has last-minutes cancellations.

It's been my experience that the best time to call him is after about 2:00 PM.  His Mobile # is (478) 457-4747.

For the past 12 years or so he has done a good job for me.  We typically book a year in advance to make sure there are no glitches.

Hope this helps,

Demi

In Jerry's case it all depends on how many hunters and a few other factors.  It is much more than what it would cost someone to go out and buy some decoys and a call, but there is a lot more to it than meets the eye.

During over 25 years of hunting, Jerry has developed a network of pecan orchard owners who depend on him to keep the crows at bay while they are preparing to get their crops in with minimal damage.  He gets many calls from the farmers reporting on crow activities.  Also, what you don't see is the legwork of physically scouting out the many orchards for each of his clients.  He puts a lot of miles on his vehicle to make sure each of his groups are going to be hunting the best orchard in the area.

Occasionally, there will be birds in an orchard that are call shy or for other reasons just don't show up...this is where the scouting and extensive network comes in.  On many occasions we have packed up and moved to a nearby orchard to find fresh crows, saving the day that might have otherwise produced a 10-15 bird count.

Another thing that new hunters don't realize is that the blind needs to be set up when the birds are gone.  Putting up a blind during the day will run most of them away, so Jerry generally sets up the blind in the evening before a hunt which allows him to set up in the best spot and this also avoids a very early arrival for setting up the morning of the hunt.

On typical years Jerry's daily average is around 50 crows.  Yes, when hunting with him we have had some slow mornings (rain, high wind, snow, etc.), but on the other hand we have been in the "Century Club" on several occasions.  Our best shoot was one in Edgefield, SC where we took 158 crows in one morning!

Although now experienced enough to find plenty of hunting on my own, I have booked 8 days of hunting with Jerry for the past few years.  At the end of my season I figure about 1/3 of the total count is taken while hunting with Jerry.  Knowing what it takes to make a good hunt, I have a real appreciation for the hard work that Jerry puts into guiding for others.  For me, during those days, it is well worth the price to be able to sit back and let someone else do the heavy lifting in order to spend some quality time with my hunting buddies.

Your experience and/or budget may dictate another approach, and there may be other crow guides, but I am happy to recommend Jerry Tomlin for a great crow hunting experience that will produce many crows and even more good memories.

It always amazes me that you folks in big crow states have a hard time of it or claim to....crow shooting must be awfully popular in Georgia in this case...the only time it gets tricky here is when my competitors hit this location and the crows change their flyway to a more difficult visually area to shoot in...shooting up through the trees...now you got folks north of you who do it routinely. However the original point is you
got all these crows and big farms and?

We have big farms but out farmers hate crows so they "educate"the birds routinely. I enjoy hunting with Jerry but I also have not harvested as many crows as others seem to"50"We have been as low as 14 and as many as 44.

Big Honkers is cheap, but he makes you wear a blindfold on the way to the set-up.
