I'm sure they will run pretty high when they first come out its a new line so it will be a while before they catch on (if ever) and the buying will be slow so places that carry them will have to mark them high starting out so they have room to mark down if and when they don't sell good which sadly they probably won't but the shell is more than likely nothing that isn't out already.

Yeah not sure they have much to compete with, I normally shoot 1 oz loads at 1290 to 1350 depending on the brand, the extra 1/8 at 1275 is good most are at 1200 now, unless you go high brass. Let's see where they come in at on price!

I look for the Hi-bird shells every time I go to the gun shop. They obviously haven't hit shelves yet. Federal says 2017, but they didn't say when in 2017. Lol
I hope they perform well, and are not expensive. I like Federal ammo. Especially their flight control buckshot.
If you want to kill tall birds the formula is simple, reduce your velocity (1150 to 1200 fps) and increase the mass of the pellet (#6). They got one side of the formula correct but all 1275 fps will do is kick you more. They do sound a lot better than the typical high brass #6 containing 1 1/4 ounce at 1330 fps.
I think for crow shooting reloading is the way to go because the best crow load has never really been available commercially at any price (a trap and skeet loading at 1150 to 1200 fps with #6). Of course when you shoot thousands of crows a year like Bob A. reloading becomes quite a chore.
I'm sure I read some where a while back that with shotguns you can have a muzzle velocity of (for example) say 1275 fps (at the muzzle) but down range 40 yards the velocity is the same as a load doing 1200 fps at the muzzle. Providing both shells have the same payload of shot. Anything to this?
All things equal that isn't going to happen, gotta do some offsets. Like 1 1/4 of Lead 6's vs 1 1/4 of steel 6's down range kinetic energy of the lead will surpass the steal at some point because of the individual pellet weight, even though the steel payload will have considerably more shot. This holds true for most hunters when they're selecting a shot for bird hunting in lead or steel the larger pellet will hold and carry energy further. So depending on your anticipated shot distance you'd select the pellet size. I'm pretty impressed on how well 7 1/2's do on crows, I'll shoot sixes if the stores out of 7.5's but I like them for this bird. I've watched some of those England video's where the champion shooter hunts and this guy is good, he shoots high brass 5's look to be 1 1/4 loads. On video they always look way out there huh! Anyway this new load could be good.

The 1 1/4 loads of HI-Bird.. retail for $13.95 a box...waaaaaay out of my league. As for velocity... any velocity on the box above 1250... and probably 1200 is wasted speed. Patterns tend to be blown and recoil adds up at the end of the day.
Oh, that is a bargin in Argentina ammo is $ 17.00 a box for 1 1/4 ounce duck loads!
I think I will stay with the Walmart Federal trap loads they sell for around six bucks a box and sometimes $ 5.50 including the tax when on sale. I bought 3,000 rounds when they were on sale because you are going to use them sooner or later. It knocks down the price (dollar cost averaging) I paid at $ 6.00 per box earlier before they went on sale!

European lead #5's are the same diameter as U.S. #6. In Europe they use the same number shot sizes we do but the diameter of their pellets is less. With George Digweed the crows would be way out there, he seems to love hitting targets at extreme ranges. Here is George setting the world record for distance at breaking clay pigeons. He switches to those same loads he used for crows when he gets past 100 yards and breaking clay pigeons with amazing regularity from 80 to 130 yards. I am pretty sure he's an Alien from another planet.

How do you know the price.? Have they hit shelves yet?
The Texas Crow Patrol used to use the Kent Ultimate Field Loads year ago - 1 and 1/2 ounces of 6's at 1450FPS. We termed it "Murder, Incorporated" because it killed at both ends.
this season i have been shooting Winchester Super X 2 3/4 Number 6's 1 1/8 load @1255 through a mod kicks choke and have had excellent results on high birds
the local dicks had 100 round value packs of them on sale for $22.50 early this fall so i scooped up 10 packs.... so it works out to around $5.50 a box of ammo...
$13.00 a box sounds a little steep for crow rounds in my opinion... even more so when something half the price works just as well...

If the "High Bird" load are 1 1/4oz and 1250-ish at $13+/box it doesnt sound much different (load wise) from the Federal Heavy Field 1 1/4oz at 1220fps for $8 and some change per box.
If this is the case, this sounds like a marketing strategy!

Couldn't agree more, they are targeting people who believe it will work better for crows or whatever just because federal says so.

I think the 1 1/8 oz loads would be a wonderful load to shoot on crows and such, albeit a bit punchy for high volume pounding. Federal has to work on the price as premium handicap trap loads come in cheaper than these. Heavier 1 1/4 oz loads are more suited for sharptail and roosters IMO.

My favorite load as of now is federal 3 1/4 dram 1 1/4 oz Of #6s at 1220 fps. They patterneed good, don't kick much and dishrag crows and pigeons at 40 yards. They are less than 9 dollars a box.

I'm not real fussy but I like speed over larger oz loads so I'll normally opt for 1OZ loads from 1290 to 1350 depending what's available and these run in that 5 to 5.50 a box range at Wally world.

Hahaha, Im just the opposite. Ill give up a little celocity to have extra 1/8-1/4 oz of lead in the air.
I went to the link provided but I couldnt ever find a listed velocity on either the 1 1/8oz or the 1 1/4oz load.
I found some Hi-Bird for sale. IF IF, the info on this site is correct I dont see much difference in the Hi-Bird 1 1/8oz and the old Remington Shur Shot load. The prices dont seem real bad on this Rogers site but Shur Shots can be bought any time of year from Academy Sporting Goods for $7/box. During dove season the Shur Shots are $6/box.
The 1 1/4 oz load is nothing different from the classic "high brass" shells that have been out for years. BUT, the price of these new 1330fps shells is better than Ive seen.
I hope to see these new Hi-Bird shells land on Walmart shelves soon.
There is always some incredibly attractive women that do that to me so i Carry a fire extinguisher around. Just by their very looks! Especially that girlfriend of yours who wears her bathing suit in the snow!
Good hunting,
BH
