My wife and I are going to Oklahoma and Kansas for a little summer vacation. Sight seeing, museums, etc. We may even drop by and see 'Ol Bob Aronsohn, and I bet most of you have heard of him!

Our first site to see is Ft. Cobb, one of the most legendary crow roost in the country, where there use to be millions of crows. I went crow hunting there in Dec. 1973. I saw more crows there in one afternoon, than I have in all the rest of my life. There must have been millions of them down behind the dam, near sundown. I have'nt been back there since 1973, and I'm sure the place has changed a lot. I was one of the fortunate ones who got to hunt in the Ft. Cobb vicinity, during the hey-day of Oklahoma crow hunting. I have also heard that the crow roost there is now vacant of crows. Hard to believe, with so many as there once was.

I may post some pictures on this website of Ft. Cobb, when we return.

Looking forward to v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n!

Ken,

Let me know when you plan to be in Kansas and I will make a point on being home. I will show you the old Medora roost site from back in the day. It is 10 minutes from my home; it had a population of one million plus crows from 1974 to about 1986 and by 1990 it was finished. They made a housing development out of the old roost. In 1968 when I first came out here there were close to two million birds in that roost!

I am having a big pool party this Saturday and if you are in town come on ahead and fill up on BBQ ribs, hot links, Texas toast, beans, pulled pork and brisket. There should be roughly two dozen folks at the party. My two little lady's will be there as well, they are twins and will be 15 in September. I met them for the first time four years ago in a snow storm and offered them a ride home. There mom trusts me with them and I am good pals with all of them.

Hi Ken,

This is a great idea for a field trip!  And I guarantee Bob is a wonderful host.  If you don't make his party, he can put you on some wonderful ribs!!!

Have fun,

Interesting man cave there. I have a bunch of vintage Canadian Shell boxes that would look good in that environment as well...

And Bob you never get a sore shoulder? Can we remind the folks here how you handled it when it was a problem of sorts? I forget sometimes I am not using my 11-87 and shoot a high brass 6 and man oh man does it ever hurt! I had forgotten that in the 11-87 high brass don't hurt me in the 11-87 whereas that BPS DOES and how!(Browning pump shotgun).....I was using the BPS to know it a bit and it spits rounds down at my feet so I don't have to look for them as in my 11-87....

This has nothing to do with crow hunting just a little gal that I have taken under my wing, her and her twin sister. She is chowing down on BBQ ribs & beans at the pool party.

As Bob A. posted, my wife and I were able to spend a very pleasant hour with Bob, while we were on vacation in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. And as I previously posted, that I had hunted crows in 1973 at the famous Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma crow roost, I did get to Ft. Cobb again last week. The area has changed noticeably, as the trees were taller, as expected, the little town of Ft. Cobb has all but dried up, and there were very few plowed fields for spring planting. It looked to me that the farmers were now raising cattle, for the most part.

While at Ft. Cobb, my wife and I rode around for a couple of hours, but only saw 4 crows! I know that crows migrate north and south, seasonally, in that area of the country, and I guess they were all up north, making babies....Bob hopes so! Interestingly, I talked to several people, and they all said that there were almost no crows there anymore.

Attached, I hope, are some pictures I took.  They are mostly self explanatory, but there is one of a small old white house, in Kearney, Missouri, that is the birth place of outlaw Jesse James. We took a guided tour of the place and it is very interesting.

If you ever have the chance, go see Bob and his crow museum. I hope he does'nt mind me inviting you into his home. Bob is full of energy, exciting, entertaining, and knows his crow!

Hello Ken,

It was very nice meeting you and your wife during your visit.

The old post office (in your first photo) in Albert looks pretty much the same as it did 50 years ago! The terrain around it has changed, looks more manicured.

The peninsula in photo # 4 on the right hand side looks like part of the old roosting area.

Does Ft. Cobb even have a café these days? Looks like the town is very depressed and going broke.

I am glad you made it back safely to North Carolina.

Best regards,

Bob A.
