I had a good laugh this morning when a so called crow hunting expert on another forum told me he hides all his dead birds because it makes crows circle out of range. Certainly crows that glide and crash outside of shotgun range will cause a crow to stop and circle but most will then continue on towards the sound of the caller. This expert told me leaving dead ones with the decoys only works in certain parts of the country. Funny thing is on a good day when crows are migrating there is no good time to go out and pick up dead birds, or have a sandwich or take a wiz. So with that said, who here thinks dead crows laying in and close around your decoy spread is a bad idea?
Amazing that as many pics like yours that are on the net a person would make statements like that, we've had long birds cause problems and try to bring them into the set. That said I wonder what his "expert" opinion is on the scout bird
I fund that absurd as well...Brits always pick up the KIA's as well. Crows in my theatre of operation seem to be mesmerized by the dead ones. Adds to the spread IMO...I never put deeks on the ground, only 3 or 4 high up as I can manage...
I have always found it strange that crows will rally around a single dead brethren, but will totally ignore 50 crows in and around the decoys. throwing crows into the decoy spread works in the Southeast!

Wait. Then, whose decoy spread is that in your photo; with all the ground decoys and many KIA? Just wondering--it's a wonderful scene, don't get me wrong.

Yes, 7 years ago next month, time flies. Can you imagine trying to run out between shots on our shoots like this to pick up the dead and hide them because you think they will flare birds LOL. I hope the Admin is reading this thread, Crowbusters needs to continue on when the experts on Facebook tell you leaving them lay is a bad idea.
Create a "Qualifier Survey" that prospective newbies will take before gaining a seat at this forum. Without screening, there is a real chance that some would get in without having a clue about crows and offer bogus advice! For examples, consider these questions for your survey:
1) Is blaze orange required for crow hunting?
2) Who makes the better crow call... Primos or Gibson?
3) Are 1 oz. #9 a good load for crows?
4) What is the better gauge for crows... 28 or 12?
5) When do you pick up your dead birds?
Any other suggestions out there?
Demi

With all due respects I would rather not answer that- loose lips sink ships. I won't give away everything here in this forum, crowbusters or not. However, before I become physically deceased I hope to bestow my crow shooting secrets on the still physical world.

Secretive about dead bird activities?
What kind of freaky sheet you got going on in your crow blind??
I hope you drop some knowledge on us mere mortals.
Ironically where I go the boogers glide across the river after I shoot them wings locked like zombies(?) Most do anyways and I am belting them or have belted them with #5 high brass shot-anyone tell me why that happens? What is strange it only happens in this one area on the border!!

Note: Strange as it sounds it doesn't happen anyplace else! My thinking is the thinner air? Some of the stranger shots I've seen have been along the border where I shoot the crow-it locks its' wings and flies smack dab into the center of a tree even a few hundred yards away !!! What is going on here? They turn into paper airplanes or what?!?!

I always pick mine up as I'm shooting them. When the activity dies off and I know I have a few min I will go grab them. BUT I am doing soft calling in places I have hit pretty hard and we don't have the volume of birds for me to not take every precaution I can. If its a new spot and seems to have plenty of fresh birds then I will leave them lay until I'm done for the morning.
Well now; I don't like to say too much about me personally but let's say I got a break....seems I am working more often than not. Too make matters worse this is the time of year (to my surprise given the heat) an old problem resurfaces:walking is extremely difficult. Some days I didn't go(crow shooting)-I was in virtually too much pain! But don't sweat it. I know it is going to lose this year. I am into homeopathy in a big way: it is amazing what doctors are getting away with to keep you in their offices!
None the less while resting up; this nagging mystery about the gliding crow was driving me nuts and I had to find out or at least get on the right track to understanding this weird situation...one day I shot a crow with the 11-87 and used high brass fives and hit it twice and it started to circle upwards..I lined up but decided not to and it glided overhead at 12:00 high...off across the border!! I was amazed but figured a third shot would be a waste! Shots like this were driving me nuts!! I really thought I was going nuts! I feel good now but it's too late to do anything. To makes matters still worse overtime is mandatory and all this cool stuff is happening. The "big E" in example...oh and again the info you have provided along with your side kick have proven pretty invaluable. I almost went ten guage years ago but at the time it was too expensive. What was the problem then was the high crows. They'd come back after dropping by but a bit high so I'd pass them up...when they'd come back terribly curious.
Anyways the dealer advised it wouldn't be a good idea...based on all the shooting I was doing. (And missing too I honestly add!)
So I haven't gone yet. I like it cooler-no ticks or mosquitoes....or anything else like that.
I got bit by a sac spider this year. It drove me nuts with the itching and I looked at the wound. Too gross here so I'll say I reached for the homeopathy and cured it in no time.Even that was nothing like my problem foot.
Hint: run your air conditioning often as various creepy crawlers will leave. I didn't see the landlords' exterminator spray the house this year either. Don't mean he didn't but I never got bit before this year. I think it was in my boot. Like its' cousin the brown recluse you don't know you got bit until hours later. But unlike the recluse the bite isn't as severe. But feels like a wicked itchy mosquito bite. And the intial stage of that kind of bite but doesn't get really bad like the BR spider...
I got bit by a "dfield spider" years ago but it felt instantainious like a wasp sting only stronger. It lasted 4 days of that species of spider unknown...never did see it either even though I smashed it good alongside my outside thigh in my pants. Swelled to about a biggie marble size and very hard...
So about facebook crow shooting experts...oh yes...everyone everywhere has those "experts"...we need them to laugh at.
