Got out after them this a:m, was hoping weatherman would be right but the cooler weather slowed down and instead of mid to low 60's it was 73 when we parked the truck. Started off real slow as crows didn't respond to the E-Caller, finally close to 7 a:m they started moving some and the mouth calls were king today, that's what it took to bring them in. I enjoy it when all you have to do is play the caller but the first few hunts this year for me would have been tuff if it wasn't for mouth calling. Birds were wary, which is strange for the area and the first hunt of the property. Anyway the clicker showed 56 when we stopped at 9:45a:m. Believe warm temps are mostly to blame, but sometimes they just don't respond well because they are crows. Anyway had a great time, got to learn a couple things and got to put pull the trigger. Gona try again Monday and hoping they will get more aggressive and let their guard down some with cooler temps. Sorry no pics, this is corporate land and they have requested no pics.

Sounds like great fun Butch! What did you learn this morning.
Me and my partner went this morning too and we got to see something REALLY COOL! All of a sudden we had 2 hawks on us screaming. With their screaming, they ignited a fire in some really distant crows and they came in hot and postured! It was really cool to witness.

I love hawks and eagles but they often screw up my shooting. One area a huge golden eagle came in and the crows were all over her like flies on a cow pattie! One another time years before in September sometime I popped a crow and this red tail came in and grabbed and flew into the woods pursued by several crows-I never forgot it!  This was when there was around a hundred locals then as there was a crow rookery who had highly successful birth rates. And naturally the late fall had locals from neighboring towns augmenting this central flock even more. But that day the crows came in singles which was very busy shooting! Given my lousy shooting ability however I only got about 14 that day....even with an Ithaca Featherweight Mod 37-a gun I highly recommend even today and cannot find one. So last year I aquired a Browning Pump  12 ga. because it spits rounds at my feet, and doesn't jam on light loads like my 11-87 does. But as I hunt alone more and more these days I will pull the 11-87 out and use the heavier loads because over all it is a very very pleasant gun to shoot and I feel so pprroouuuddd using a Remington. Especially knowing  it requires two settings and not a "tomato stake" as a ":colleague" called it once which was really funny to read that.

Lefty,

Just relearned a lesson on some ammo, and been trying a new calling technique with my hand calls that is working fairly well on wary birds. Plus a fact thru records of past hunts that some areas do not reload as well as others. I may in the future put these properties on a cycle of every other year. I let one go unhunted last year and will be hunting it Monday if all goes as planned. Of course this is just my thougts on info I have, some areas will always have a lot more crows due to food sources available and habitat they like. Could be just the timing of the hunts on these spots, as with all crow hunters I'm just trying to get a advantage on these rascals.

56 is a good morning in my parts. As for your findings with the crows being wary of electronic calls, I'm kind of wondering if and when the bandits refuse to come to said. Seems every dude these days is packing electronics and blasting out calls.. Well run operation, thanks so kindly for sharing..

It's just me but I believe a good hunter needs to learn mouth calling before electronic calling...and it is true-everyone seems to have electronic callers these days. They don't know how to "talk" to crows like I do-they just call away and hope for some action...but highly unskilled but if a lot of new crows all the time it doesn't matter. Me? As you might have guessed I am a "purist"....rather not lug anything extra into the field. Anyways many electronic caller buffs don't know when or how to use a caller..they just crank away!

Got out again this a:m, cooler temp mid 60's, breezy and overcast. Felt great! Shot the area that wasn't hunted last year and had high hopes of the first triple digit hunt of this year, well it didn't happen. Not complaining but this season has started off strange as how wary the crows have been. Last two hunts have been over 70 miles apart and the crows have acted the same, very e-caller shy. Late season stuff that you expect to encounter using an e-caller. Anyway we killed 44 that we worked hard for, probly should have had close to 15 more but we missed some chip shots that were way to easy. Maybe encountering what M12 spoke about. These spots usually hunt easy especially the first hunts and birds are "green" so this has me scratching my head on what's going on. I have spots that are tuff and kills of 5 to 10 are great, that said one thing I've learned about Mr. Crow is he will humble your expectations. Anyway stars lined up enuff to allow us a good challenging hunt that we enjoyed, got to laugh a lot at each others shooting skills and had good fellowship, definitely a good day. But I'm like all of us I always want to kill more smile

If you live in a great crow area expect you have others doing too. When I had crows almost everywhere few passed up the oppurtunity to shoot at them. Since then they have moved on I am sorry to say to other parts of the state. Have had them ignore the e-caller but see everyone was using them....every one wants to shoot crows....one trick worked as we used a different call no one else uses plus I am a very proficient crow caller about the only thing I get right so my partner and I used to score when no one else could! NO as many as if we were the only ones though but the only ones who knew what we were doing in extreme conditions,.,meaning educated over shot at birds...
