Alright my fellow crow hunters. I’m in search of a good caller. Something with some good and loud range. Mainly at an affordable price. Any ideas on building one or what’s the best optio? Thanks

Here are two home made units that I powered with a 12 volt marine battery for almost 30 years before retiring them in 2010. They used cassette tapes.

Here is a photo of the lighter colored wood caller on the largest crow shoot (solo shoot) of my life in 2010. I shot 834 crows in one spot all day long and used 1,150 trap loads in 7 1/2's and # 8's.

I was in an area where the feed was scarce and I happened to find a section of ground where about every bird in the county was feeding. I got in there early the next morning and shot all day long as they drifted in to feed from every direction. I had to go back to the truck twice for more ammo that day.

Here is a hunt where I shot 506 in one spot with a 20 gauge 870 Remington. I went back the next morning to pick them up and setup this photo. The coyotes ate over a hundred of my crows just over night! There are 386 in the photo. I was setup right off a river in this photo, you can see the dyke in back of me in the photo.

That is certainly impressive to say the least !! Bob, when you hunt the flyway areas do you leave your caller running nonstop ? How often do you have it running ? I have a flyway with limited vision for me, i'll be shooting in a somewhat small open area among a lot of woods so i realy wont be able to see them in the distance. wondering how much calling to do ?

Years ago, I built a caller from a cassette player. Opened it up, clipped the wires to the speaker, and used a CB PA speaker attached to the clipped wires. Tons of volume. I think you can get a decent cassette player for around $30. Not sure about the PA speaker though. Wasn't as fancy as BobA's. The problem would be the cassettes, Burnham Bros. out of TX still sells them I think. Others might also.

That set up lasted me from 1982 till 2015. Worked like a champ.

That's what i started with & still use it on special occasions. killed a lot of crows & two coyotes with it. great sound with the horn speaker.  usually started with fighting crows, then crow owl fight, and distressed crow last.  i then got the hawk crow fight with distress card also. that worked great. ( ebay ) . you can play two calls at once with that and a lot of times that does the trick. play fighting crows and then half way thru hit the crow owl fight !!   or crow owl fight mixed with the crow distress.   start with the volume low & crank it up as needed.      if one of your cards has the distressed housecat on it use it as a last resort. you might be surprised !  GOOD LUCK !
