A Solo Milestone

While at a local Bible study Thursday, a participant complained about crows eating the pecans at his property. I told him “We need to talk!”

He had 6-8 trees along side of a field of corn stubble. We set it up for a hunt today, but the guy I was going with bailed out last night. Too late for a replacement, so it was a solo hunt.

My shooting started VERY poorly and I finally found the cause. A loose stock bolt on my A-400, which allowed for 1/4” movement at the stock, 3/8” movement at the barrel and maybe 2-3 feet at the crows!! Some in-blind gunsmithing got me straightened out and crow snow started falling!

Toward the latter part of the hunt,

I realized I was approaching a milestone and while taking down the blind two groups of incoming fish crows allowed me to finish with 102 crows!  Guess it pays to attend Bible study as this was Manna from Heaven for me!!

This was my first “Solo Century Shoot” and it was lonely but productive.  As you can see, my portable fan was my partner. The FF5 flapper also did yeoman’s duty in getting them down close.

Also note the peanut in the beak of one crow (saw other peanuts fall out as they were hit). They had a mixed bag of food today.

Manna from heaven, lol. Like that.

I do like hunting both solo and with a partner. Solo hunts are more work but they offer a different kind of personal satisfaction too.

Thanks for the report!!

Demi,

A guy always remembers his first hunts no matter how many years pass.

Now you can set your sights on 150 and then 200.

Bob,

Guess crow hunting and relationships with girls have something in common! 😄

Although not solo hunts, we’ve exceeded 150 on occasions and approached the 200 door last year with one hunt of 173. Can’t imagine 500 down!!

Demi,

I mentioned to my partner that I was going to check out a new area about 8 years ago and I went alone. About 90% of the time it turns out to be a wild goose chase but once in a great while you find a new hot spot. My first two days I shot over 500 crows each day hunting in both the morning and then again in the afternoon. When I finally got Dick on the phone he was at my motel room within 24 hours! It's very gratifying when things go well on crows!

 Outstanding Demi!

Too bad for your partner that he bailed out. I'd have a hard time being lonely during a good shoot.
