A very useful hunting app for your phone

I found and used a very useful app for hunting this fall, Antler Insanity, I thought some of you might find it useful as well. Obviously aimed at deer hunters but it is quite useful for crow and waterfowl hunting.  It provides a map of where you are physically standing.  There are a few different types of maps, I prefer satellite. It will also provide you a graphic arrow showing wind direction and speed for your location and the weather. It also provides sunrise and sunset times for your location and a range finder (very useful for determining how far away you are from any building).  It gives you the ability to save any of your hunting stand locations (if you are there) and name them.  Once done you can go to your list of stands at anytime and get the wind direction and speed (useful for determining good from not so good stands).

Oh and you can export your list of stands and send them to me if you need any help using this app

Sweet! Now we can beat the deer with technology, knowing that they don't have their own apps to avoid us (guess that is already built in to their genes).

Your post begged the question... are there any apps for crow hunting ??? Looks like the answer is YES! Check out:

- Crow Sounds: A choice of 8 various recorded crow sounds (the background noise indicates they were in cages). Free

- Crow Sounds - Crow Call Sound: 25 looped crow recordings (better sound quality, but many with alarm call). Free

- CrowPro - Calls & Sounds for Crow Hunting: Turns your phone and speakers into a low-cost electronic caller. Several 30-minute sound tracks. $2.99

- CrowPro - Crow Hunt Planner for Crow Hunting: Plan your blind layout, etc. (Looks a little Hokey, IMO). $2.99

- Forest Crow Hunter 3D: A game for shooting crows with a pellet gun. Free

- Crow Bird Hunter 2016: Another game for shooting with a scope. Free

An update on the various crow apps.  After downloading a couple of the free apps mentioned above, I decided that they were not of the quality to hunt with, or even try out, for that matter.  The CrowPro - Calls and Sounds for Crow Hunting app was only three bucks, so I sprung for it and downloaded it to my iPhone.  It takes a minute or two for it to upload the files when you open the app, but then you have a choice of several call sequences to choose from.

I'm somewhat of a Luddite, so the only Bluetooth speaker unit that I have is a little giveaway unit from one of the tournaments I attended last year.  I took it with me while driving to work this morning and tried 3 or 4 sites that I have hunted and/or areas that looked promising.  The little speaker does not have a volume control, so the sound can only be controlled via my phone.  Still not much volume.

At the third spot, I held it out the window and coaxed a small group of crows in over my truck.  They seemed interested and came in well within range.  Just this group and not any others were attracted.  Had I used the FoxPro, I feel sure that I could have drawn in many from as far as the horizon at most of the spots that I visited.

Maybe with better speakers and more volume this could be a low-cost way do do a little running & gunning.  Try it out and have some fun with it, but just remember...You get what you pay for!
